Insomniac Games seems to have leaked the existence of DLC for Spider-Man 2, by unintentionally turning on the debug menu for everyone.
After ‘violent threats’ from so-called fans, the New Game+ mode for Spider-Man 2 has finally been added to the game, but it’s brought with it an unexpected, and unintended, bonus.
Developer Insomniac Games released the patch on Thursday, March 7, which added New Game+, the ability to replay missions, new suits, gold gadgets, and the chance to go beyond the base game level cap.
Following the update, however, players discovered the update unlocked access to the game’s debug menus, which are used during development to skip to certain levels, perform diagnostic tests, and other things needed for testing.
Within this menu, players have found references to the villain Beetle, a character not featured in the main game. As such, many have speculated that this character could be the subject of potential DLC for Spider-Man 2.
Interestingly, the files specifically refer to ‘Beetle Janice’, the current comic version of the character who is the daughter of Tombstone – a villain that does appear in Spider-Man 2.
While it’s certainly possible that this could relate to potential DLC, sometimes content in the game’s files doesn’t actually end up being used, so it’s no gurantee.
Insomniac hasn’t officially announced if any DLC for Spider-Man 2 is in the works, but previous rumours pointed to a crossover with Daredevil. The original Spider-Man game for PlayStation 4 received three slices of DLC, centred around Black Cat and Silver Sable.
Shortly after the update, Insomniac promised a hotfix to rectify the issue and warned that accessing the debug menu could corrupt your save data.
‘We’re aware the latest game update may have inadvertently allowed access to a development game menu,’ the developer wrote on Twitter. ‘There’s a hotfix on the way. Please note that using this menu could corrupt your saves and trophy progress. There is no risk associated with playing the game as intended.’
Spider-Man 2 has sold over 10 million copies since it launched in October.
