Tony Todd has revealed most of his recordings for Spider-Man 2 ended up on the cutting room floor but they could get used in the future.
Spider-Man’s alien foe Venom was a significant part of Insomniac’s marketing for Spider-Man 2 on the PlayStation 5, but he only turns up well after the halfway mark of the game and doesn’t really have that many lines compared to the other characters.
Insomniac’s senior narrative director, Jon Paquette, has already said that they’re considering giving Venom his own spin-off game, and recent comments by the man behind the voice of Venom seems to suggest it’s already being planned.
According to voice actor Tony Todd, only 10% of his recorded work was used in the game. So either Insomniac has thrown all that work in the bin or the rest is going to be used for the spin-off.
Speaking at a Spider-Man 2 panel over the weekend, Todd, said only a fraction of what he recorded was used in the game, according to Evan Filarca, who was at the show.
Todd also revealed that Insomniac scrapped a scene of his where Miles Morales gets infected by a symbiote.
This news has sparked debate about the future of Venom, as some fans think DLC or an entire spin-off game for the iconic character must be the reason the character was cut short.
The original Spider-Man game did have quite a bit of single-player DLC but given Insomniac themselves are hinting at a spin-off (presumably a ‘half-sequel’ in the style of the Miles Morales game) that does seem the most likely route they’ll take.
Over on Reddit, some fans support the idea that a spin-off game makes most sense, while others are a bit more cynical thinking Venom will return as pay-to-play character. Although that’s not something Insomniac has ever done before.
‘Probably did the voice work for Venom to be a fully playable character,’ says TheBobizzle, to which TheOncomingBrows responds:
‘I’m kind of half expecting this to be the next news to come out. It’s very suspect for them to put the massive amount of work into a full Venom combat system and then only use it for like 15 minutes.’
User HaikusfromBuddha says, ‘They’ll probably sell you the cut content as Venom DLC. They know they can double dip and get a ton of money.’
Those Reddit comments seem overly cynical though and the more obvious reason why Venom wasn’t playable for longer is that he’s overpowered, and it’d get boring without a proper challenge – which doesn’t really exist in the game as it is, beyond the two Spider-Men.
If there was to be a dedicated spin-off though, Insomniac could introduce some of the other symbiotes and tougher foes from the comics.
Even assuming the spin-off is on its way though it’s unclear when it will be released, and whether it’ll come before or after Insomniac’s Wolverine game – which currently doesn’t have a release date or year.
