The lead designer of Fable, and creator of the god game genre, has returned to gaming and so has his gift for hyperbole.

It is a long time since the video game world has heard anything significant from Peter Molyneux, the creator of Populous, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, Fable, and Godus. Although that’s largely because he’s also the creator of a lot of promises, about his games, that repeatedly turned out not to be true.

Molyneux became so infamous for his inaccurate descriptions of the games he was working on that his reputation began to suffer, especially as the Kickstarter-funded Godus never left early access.

The last anyone heard of him he’d reportedly made £40 million from a NFT game, but now he’s back with unlikely sounding promises about a new title, which suggests he still hasn’t learnt his lesson.

Molyenux left Microsoft in 2012 to form a new studio called 22cans, where he’s now working on a new, untitled, title that he insists is based ‘on a mechanic that has never been seen in a game before.’

He doesn’t go into any more detail than that though, insisting that given past failures ‘people looking at this would then get very annoyed and angry.’

‘I feel like we are exploiting that mechanic in a world and an environment which may be familiar to people. And because it is in a familiar environment, it’ll be a lot fresher,’ Molyneux told Gamereactor.

‘And a lot of this is very mystical because I’m trying to avoid telling you what it’s like. But it’s going to be a lot more like a kind of Fable, Black and White, Dungeon Keeper kind of experience.’

Rather than a mobile title, this will be a PC and console game because ‘we need the power’ and it’ll also be the first game he’s programmed himself since Black & White in 2001.

‘It has been evolving and we’ve been exploring ideas about it for almost five years now. So, you know, it’s very, very close to my heart,’ he added.

He doesn’t give any indication of when the game will be shown in public, but he does comment briefly on the trailer for the reboot of Fable, saying he liked it and his ‘hopes are high.’
