Best Ways to Learn Java on a Phone
Learning Java can be hard, especially on a phone, but it is possible with the right tools. This article will show you the tools that you will need to go from beginner to advanced in no time. There are a ton of apps out there, some of them are really helpful but most of them are a complete waste of time. The apps I recommend most are:
- SoloLearn: Learn to Code (Best for Android)

- Learn Java — Coding Lessons (Best for iOS, not available on Android)

SoloLearn is a great place to start if you have a device running android. SoloLearn offers a huge variety of lessons and has amazing community support. A big downside to SoloLearn is its price point, coming in at $6.99 per month, it is not cheap. However, if money is not an issue, the app has many ways to network with other developers with each user having their own profile. The app also comes with lessons on not just Java but multiple other languages. Investing in this app would give you access to an incredible amount of information.
If you have iOS, however, I’d recommend the Learn Java — Coding Lessons app. All of their lessons are well thought out and unlike most other apps, the practice problems in Learn Java are actual coding problems. Many other apps will have you drag and drop code blocks or fill in a multiple-choice problem. That just isn’t the way to learn to program. You have to write actual code to learn and Learn Java allows you to do that. The video solutions in Learn Java are a huge bonus too. If you’re like most people, you’d rather watch a quick 3-minute video than spend 30 minutes trying to understand the solution. Learn Java has accompanying video explanations for all its problems. It comes in at a price of just $3.99 to access everything in the app which is a steal compared to the $6.99 per month of SoloLearn.
Both these apps have their share of positives and negatives. Although SoloLearn has more programming languages to learn, and a large community it would put a pretty sizable dent in your wallet compared to Learn Java. Although Learn Java does not teach as many languages as SoloLear, It makes up for this by offering quality lessons on the things they do teach. Their video solutions are also the only of its kind in the App Store. For now, the app is not available to Android users.
