Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) has become a popular digital payment solution for those looking to spread the cost of a purchase over weeks or months. However, there has been much pushback from regulators around the world with concerns over consumers accumulating debt. Credit card companies are typically more regulated than BNPL, however, regulation around the world is stepping up and countries are beginning to implement regulations specific to BNPL services. According to data from Open Banking Limited, there are 10 million open banking users in the UK. That’s over 15% of the UK population. Six and a half years after rolling out open banking in the UK, we have seen dramatic adoption across the country with competition as a key driver for its growth. The UK government has committed to implementing smart data powers through a new Digital Information and Smart Data Bill, laying the groundwork for further growth. A third of digital payment users are from rural India, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s latest Currency and Finance report. This transformation to India's digital payments landscape has been partially driven by the rapid adoption of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). With over 14 billion monthly transactions driven by 424 million unique users in June 2024 alone, UPI is revolutionising the peer-to-peer payment space. With over half of the fintech consumers in India from semi-urban and rural areas, the adoption of digital payment methods has spread much further than the main urban cities.
