About us
The University of Latvia was founded on 28 September 1919. UL is the only classical university in Latvia, performing a leading role in development of national education system, and, furthermore, in growth of society and economy. UL has 6 faculties, 7 regional branches and 3 colleges. UL provides studies in over 100 study programmes of various levels. More than 15 000 students acquire education here, and the university staff consists of of 3 000 employees. Alma Mater experiences rapid development – at present, the UL Academic Centre is being established in Torņakalns as one of the most modern study and research facilities in Northern Europe. The faculties of natural sciences, medicine and health sciences are already located in the Academic Centre’s House of Nature and House of Science. The House of Letters is to open its doors soon, comprising studies and research in social sciences, humanities and computer sciences.

In late September, the University of Latvia celebrated its 105th anniversary, offering various events throughout the week – from UL Community Garden cleanup to the academic ball, more than 10 educational, celebratory and entertaining events have delighted all those who marked this significant anniversary 👏 🥳

"The goal of this event is to establish a strong project representation team that consists of individuals responsible for effective communication between European countries. How to ensure this remains one of the key objectives of the KickOff event," emphasises the Head of the University of Latvia Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine, Professor Mārcis Leja.
On September 24th, a reception was held at the European Commission's Representation Office in Riga, celebrating the kickoff of the EuCanScreen project. This event brought together high-level EU representatives and ambassadors, demonstrating a strong commitment to enhancing cancer screening and prevention across Europe. Distinguished attendees included: ● Morten Jespersen, Ambassador of Denmark ● Ine Måreng, Ambassador of Norway ● Matija Bučar, Deputy Ambassador of Slovenia ● Alexandros Sakkas, Head of Consular Affairs, Greece From Latvia, we were honoured by the presence of Aiga Balode from the Ministry of Health and Stefan Eriksson, Director of the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Latvia. The programme started with a WP4 meeting, where crucial discussions were held on improving sustainability in cancer screening practices and the evening provided participants the opportunity to network and exchange ideas on the future steps of the project. Professor Mārcis Leja, head of Latvijas Universitate KPMI, emphasised the meeting’s vision: "The goal of this event is to establish a strong project representation team that consists of individuals responsible for effective communication between European countries. How to ensure this remains one of the key objectives of the KickOff event." Urška Ivanuš, Work Package 4 (sustainability) leader from Slovenia, also shared her enthusiasm: "I am truly grateful to be a part of such a significant project. It's no secret that champions study at UL! Here is the story of another one of them: 👏 19-year-old Latvian Ansis Gustavs Andersons has won a gold medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics! 👉 He graduated from Druva secondary school this summer. Now he has moved from Saldus region to Riga to continue studying programming at the University of Latvia 💪 We are proud and wish him success in other challenges to come as well as in upcoming studies! 🤝 💐

📢 From today, August 19th, until the end of the month, August 30th, the University of Latvia (UL) is accepting applications for doctoral studies. 👉 New doctoral candidates can expect several new initiatives aimed at promoting a high-quality and efficient study and research process. UL has established a unified Doctoral School and is offering greater opportunities for funding. 💬 "This is a completely new approach to preparing new doctors, as everyone will have the same 'starting point' and the same rules, regardless of how 'wealthy' a particular field of science is," explains UL Vice-Rector for Research Guntars Kitenbergs.
