🚄 Rail Baltica, the European standard-gauge railway connecting #Lithuania, #Latvia, and #Estonia to the broader European rail network, stands as one of 6️⃣ major transport infrastructure #megaprojects reshaping the European #transport landscape. ☑ These cross-border projects are critical to the EU’s strategy for improving #mobility, #freight movement, and #safety across the continent. 🎯 Despite varying geographies and technologies, we all share the same goal: enhancing #connectivity and #efficiency within Europe’s transport network. In terms of strategic importance and scale, #RailBaltica joins other transformative infrastructure initiatives like: 🔹 Femern A/S Fehmarnbelt Tunnel: Linking Germany & Denmark (world's longest underwater tunnel); 🔹 GALLERIA DI BASE DEL BRENNERO - BRENNER BASISTUNNEL BBT SE: Connecting Austria & Italy (longest railway tunnel at 64km); 🔹 TELT Lyon Turin Tunnel: A 65km rail link through the Alps between France & Italy. Rail Baltica is the largest railway project currently underway in Europe, stretching across 3️⃣ countries and indirectly connecting Poland and Finland. With nearly 9️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ kilometers of new tracks and challenging river and swamp crossings, this project is set to reshape the region's connectivity. 🔵 “We continuously learn from other European projects and integrate best practices to maximize economic benefits, enhance regional integration, improve military mobility, and achieve the EU’s long-term strategic goals. Our main focus now is on accelerating construction work,” says Marko Kivila, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board at RB Rail AS. ➡ https://lnkd.in/dYUukWnS

💼 Today, we hosted a business breakfast for members of the Baltic Institute of Corporate Governance (BICG) with the Rail Baltica team to discuss project management, challenges, and future priorities. ➡ During the discussions, BICG Vice President and Head of Latvia Andris Grafs emphasized the importance of bold decision-making to improve project management and implementation. ➡ As the Baltic States aim to complete the main Rail Baltica route by 2030, efforts are underway to finalize the first phase, with future progress dependent on available funding. 💬 “Considering the cost estimates for the #RailBaltica project in 2024 and the set implementation deadline, all three Baltic States have developed solutions for the first phase of construction. Currently, the main priority in Latvia is to reach an agreement with partners on the construction plan for the first phase of Rail Baltica, including prioritizing synergy with existing railway infrastructure,” noted RB Rail AS Board Member Kitija Gruškevica. 🔵 Gruškevica also emphasized that to maximize the socio-economic benefits for the Baltic region, it is crucial to build all the infrastructure elements planned in the Rail Baltica project, implementing the full scope of the project. However, considering the significant cost increases, a phased implementation of the project is necessary, setting priorities. The meeting also discussed Rail Baltica’s role in ensuring military mobility, particularly its importance in the NATO corridor. RB Rail AS Council Member Girts Ruda emphasized that “Rail Baltica is a significant project for both the Baltic region and the entire European Union. With effective management and financing, it can promote economic growth, support sustainability, and strengthen our position in Europe.” Find out more ➡ https://lnkd.in/dQXPWnPY

Recently we hosted a group of journalists ✍ from the German-Northern European Program in Riga. During the event, Girts Ruda, Member of the Supervisory Board of RB Rail - the project's central coordinator - and Baiba Zauere, a Management Board Member at Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas | Rail Baltica, emphasized the strategic significance of #RailBaltica. ➡ The journalists, representing Germany, the Nordic countries, and the Baltic states, were informed about the project's role in bridging a critical gap in European transport infrastructure by connecting the Baltic region to the broader European rail network via two trans-European TEN-T corridors. 🔵 Ģirts Rūda underscored Germany’s essential involvement in the project, stating, "We are pleased to welcome these journalists. The historical and ongoing connection between the Baltics and Germany is evident, with Germany playing a vital role in Rail Baltica. Contracts with German companies have exceeded €85 million, and their expertise is invaluable." ⚪ Whereas Baiba Zauere highlighted the broader significance of these interactions. "With the collaboration of over 300 international and Baltic partners, and significant financial backing from the European Union, we are advancing toward a more connected and sustainable future for Europe. We appreciate the interest from international media and look forward to engaging with both global and local outlets to discuss the project's progress, impact, and broader promotion," she said.

#RailBaltica, the largest rail infrastructure project in the history of the Baltic States, has been recognized as a strategic #geopolitical necessity. 🔷 “Connecting the Baltic States to our Western allies through the north-south railway axis must be our #strategic priority as enhanced capabilities project a power of #deterrence in times of geopolitical sensitivity and volatility,” stresses Kitija Gruškevica, Vice-Chairperson of the Management Board at RB Rail, the central coordinator of the Rail Baltica project. ➡ Rail Baltica is designed to serve both civilian and military needs, providing infrastructure and rolling stock capacity for peacetime and potential armed conflicts. ➡ Completing the 1435 mm infrastructure is essential for the full #integration of the Baltic States into the European Union rail transport market. Standard gauge railways allow military equipment and troops to be transported across borders without the need to change the gauge, a process that is time-consuming and logistically challenging. This standardization increases the EU’s ability to respond to security threats and strengthen vulnerable regions. ➡ Moreover, transporting an entire military unit on a single train would enable movements without causing major disruptions to road traffic. Rail transport also minimizes wear and tear on road infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient movement of specialized cargo, including heavy machinery and potentially hazardous goods.
