🇪🇸 Busy week in #Madrid, celebrating EIF's 30th anniversary with the Spanish ecosystem and marking the success of the European Tech Champions Initiative. Since its launch in 2023, #ETCI has closed fund deals worth €2bn and mobilised €10bn in public and private resources ⏩ Investments have been made in 16 technology scale-ups, two of which are Spanish. Also in #Spain we have invested in 1 mega fund specialising in #deeptech and climate and an investment in a second mega fund is expected by 2025. As an ETCI participant country, Spain has announced an additional contribution of €300 million to the initiative 🔗 bit.ly/ETCI-in-Spain

That's a wrap! 🦆 In its 4th edition, #UglyDuck24 gathered Europe's venture capital community in Luxembourg with more than 280 VC funds represented. This year, we introduced a new “& friends” programme, welcoming over 140 GPs from the private equity and private credit ecosystems to join the conversations. 🎥 Watch our recap video for insights on how, in an evolving equity landscape, we must adapt to new realities and future-proof Europe as a key playground for innovation & sustainability.

Closing the week after an inspiring #UglyDuck24! 🦆 This 4th edition of our #venturecapital conference brought together Europe’s VC community - along with private equity and private credit fund managers - for two days of impactful conversations 💡 Here are some highlights: 🔹 "You can all be agents of change", said EIF CE Marjut Falkstedt, calling on fund managers to lead in advancing innovation, sustainability, and diversity across sectors. Tackling Europe’s €800bn funding gap is a mission we can only achieve together. 🔹 Does VC still matter? The EIF's head of equity investments, Uli Grabenwarter, emphasised the role of venture capital in driving Europe's future: "There will be no innovation in Europe without VC!" 🔹 Keynote speaker Louise Kjellerup Roper underscored the need for a shift from responsibility to resilience. Investing in regenerative solutions, she said, is key to building a sustainable future. 🔹 In #privateequity and #privatecredit, fund managers discussed approaches to making companies future-proof. “Impact can and needs to be at the core of every successful company’s strategy, not only on the periphery. It’s not an extracurricular activity”, noted Maria Samoilova, managing partner of IB Spain Impact Debt Fund. The EIF’s strategic vision includes policy implementation, ecosystem building, and crisis response to foster sustainable growth in Europe. We also welcomed students from our #EmpoweringEquity Academy, who engaged with fund managers and joined discussions on the future of VC and PE. Their presence is a reminder of the importance of investing in the next generation of leaders in the European VC and PE space. 🙌 Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions! Does European VC still matter? 🦆 Full room at our #UglyDuck24 for the roller coaster ride on the present and future of #venturecapital with the EIF’s head of equity investments Uli Grabenwarter. This is how it went: ⬇️ #US VC is outperforming European VC – again. ⬆️ Not quite: consolidated institutional grade European VC is still competitive. ⬇️ But why take the detour of VC if you can ride the #Nasdaq wave? ⬆️ Well, no VC - no Nasdaq!! ⬇️ Meanwhile, #pensionfunds are taking a free ride: just 0,01% of their assets under management go into VC. Amidst the challenges, however, we all agree that #innovation is the only way forward. But innovation without venture capital will not happen – or if it cannot happen in Europe, it will find its place elsewhere 🌎 Here's Uli's plea to European #VC: let’s start a new narrative together.
