Demagnetization in Electric Motors: A New Sensorless Detection Method Utilizing Machine Learning Have you ever considered the risk of demagnetization in your electric drives? This common issue can have serious impacts on the performance and safety of your drives. But don’t worry, we have developed an innovative solution to reliably detect potential faults without the need for additional sensors. In their latest scientific publication, written within the AI4CSM project, our researchers Daniel Walch, Christoph Blechinger, Martin Schellenberger, Maximilian Hofmann, Bernd Eckardt and Vincent LORENTZ describe a method to detect even minor demagnetization faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). As part of IISB's #CognitivePowerElectronics (#CPE) concept, the research focuses on analyzing inverter-based current data using #MachineLearning techniques. Through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and an anomaly detection algorithm with a one-class support vector machine (OC-SVM), a detection rate of up to 99% is reached. Implementing machine learning techniques in fault detection not only provides high accuracy but also allows cost-efficient solutions. Our sensorless approach enables an easy, space-saving installation as well as less maintenance and higher reliability of the drive system.
