This week, the United Nations in Sri Lanka marked #UNDay, highlighting the Pact for the Future adopted at the Summit of the Future. The Pact provides a roadmap for addressing the most pressing global challenges, from climate change to peacebuilding and digital innovation. The event brought together the UN, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, development partners, and civil society leaders to explore how Sri Lanka can take ownership of the Pact’s vision and action points to build a more resilient and sustainable future for all.

United Nations Assistant-Secretary-General (ASG), UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific UNDP in Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya during her one day in-country mission yesterday. ASG Wignaraja was accompanied by Resident Representative of UNDP in Sri Lanka, Ms. Azusa Kubota. In her engagements, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja reinforced UNDP’s commitment, building on its long-standing partnership, to supporting national priorities towards attaining sustainable development. She also met with Asian Development Bank (ADB) #SriLanka counterparts Mr. Takafumi Kadono, Country Director #SriLanka Resident Mission; Ms. Cholpon Mambetova, Country Ops Head; & Ms. Lakshini Fernando, Senior Economist; reaffirming commitment to advancing partnerships with ADB. With the #SummitOfTheFuture looming ahead, a youth consultation was facilitated by United Nations Sri Lanka in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Sri Lanka to address critical youth issues, as a part of efforts in the lead-up to #SriLanka's participation at the summit. Here's a recap of the day, which looked to connect the #SotF with youth & future generations centred on key issues crucial for their #development and #empowerment. These included improving access to education, fostering innovation and digital literacy, promoting sustainable practices, enhancing health and well-being, and equipping youth with leadership, political participation, employment & entrepreneurship opportunities. The consultation was co-led by UNFPA Sri Lanka, UNDP #lka, FAO Sri Lanka & United Nations Volunteers Sri Lanka.

The spread of harmful speech can have devastating consequences. From July to August, mis/disinformation in Sri Lanka increased by five times, with harmful speech targeted toward women accounting for nearly 45% of all harmful content recorded in 2024.
