Dilmah Tea
Food and Beverage Services
Family tea company Dilmah is founded on its Founder’s passion for tea, its Taste, Goodness & ethical Purpose.
About us
Dilmah is unique; a brand that is founded on a passionate commitment to quality and authenticity in tea, it is also a part of a philosophy that goes beyond commerce in seeing business as a matter of human service. Launched in 1988 by Merrill J. Fernando Dilmah pioneered important initiatives which have become the hallmarks of the company. These are important because traditional tea, made in the ‘orthodox’ style – a production process that starts with handpicking the leaves and continues through withering, rolling, oxidation and firing – follows a technique perfected over centuries. It produces tea that are varied and sophisticated. The alternative is CTC, a relatively recent method of production designed to offer a quick ‘cuppa’ and in the process sacrifices all that is special in tea. Merrill describes CTC as ‘tea without a soul.’ Today Dilmah is the only vertically integrated tea company with its own tea gardens – some of Ceylon’s best estates – and state of the art printing & packaging facilities, tea packing and investments in every segment of the industry. Dilmah concentrates on offering tea aficionados around the world a truly different experience in tea, presenting an unmatched collection of teas, each tasted and selected with the benefit of decades of experience in tea, and most importantly marked by genuine innovation and a passion for quality. Dilmah restates its commitment to the values on which it is founded along with Merrill’s sons Dilhan & Malik. Dilmah is an Ethical Tea, in that all packaging profits are retained in Sri Lanka and fund the MJF Charitable Foundation and Dilmah Conservation. We believe that Business is a Matter of Human Service.

Last Sunday, we experienced in Colombo one of the most inspiring demonstrations of courage, commitment and achievement. At AIDEX 2024, a 31 year endeavour spearheaded by Prof. A H Sheriffdeen and Colombo Friend in Need Society, people with disability who are too often considered disabled in a wider sense, displayed extraordinary ability. We are privileged to have supported Prof. Sherriffdeen and Colombo Friend in Need Society in this incredible project and the wider education scholarships and entrepreneurship support, for over 20 years. The perfect tea-inspired ice cream doesn’t exist — wait, yes it does! Miro - an artisan ice cream brand in Chile - created a tea-based soft ice cream using our Elixir of Ceylon Tea. This special edition flavour of Tea, Peach and Almond ice cream had delicate hints of tea in every creamy bite. Plus, it's packed with natural antioxidants, low in sugar, and brimming with goodness. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐞𝐲𝐥𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐚: 𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 Growing up, black tea with lemon was a staple for me, but I never paid much attention to what kind of tea I was drinking. As a foodie and a bit of a hedonist, I am almost ashamed that I had only a limited understanding of tea. I bought fancy brands, often drawn in by fancy packaging, without truly knowing what was in my cup. All of that changed when I came to Sri Lanka and had the privilege of meeting the Dilmah Tea family. They invited me to their School of Tea (Dilmah SOT) where I learned from scratch the true art of Ceylon tea and why it stands out among all other teas. What makes Ceylon tea special? Its purity, taste, and quality are unmatched. Hand-plucked with care, the leaves are chosen to ensure the finest flavor. The climate of Sri Lanka, with its rich soil and perfect growing conditions, produces tea that’s naturally packed with antioxidants. Unlike many commercial teas, which often mix leaves from different origins, Ceylon tea remains unblended, preserving its authenticity and unique flavor profile. Ceylon tea is free of additives and artificial flavors, making it a healthier, more natural choice. The dedication to quality is evident from the way it is grown to the final sip in your cup. As I dove deeper into the world of Ceylon tea, I found myself not just appreciating the product but also the passion and hard work behind it. I’ve visited several tea plantations and witnessed firsthand the commitment it takes to produce this tea. For almost three weeks now, I’ve been hiking the Pekoe Trail, surrounded by tea fields for 10 hours each day, watching the workers—mostly women—pluck tea leaves by hand. I’ve learned that hand-plucking is the only way to guarantee the highest quality. This is difficult work, and without the proper treatment, these workers would suffer greatly. But with great brands like Dilmah, who pay over the minimum wage and offer better living conditions, education, and respect, these workers are treated with dignity. At first, I felt bad for the workers, thinking how hard their job must be. But after spending time with them, visiting their homes, and seeing the strong sense of community and joy they share in their work, I’ve come to see things differently. The pride they take in producing tea is something we should all appreciate. From now on, I’ll make sure Ceylon tea and the Dilmah brand have a strong voice, and I’ll do my part to share their story. As consumers, we must not be misled by big brands selling mediocre tea for high prices without ensuring the well-being of their workers. Let’s make sure that if we drink tea, we drink high-quality tea—Ceylon tea, Dilmah tea. Trust me, your cup will taste even better when you know the care that goes into it.

We are tea growers sharing our love for tea in a world where taste and goodness are too often sacrificed for convenience and price. We taste over 10,000 teas each week, and we select only the finest for Dilmah. We love innovation and embrace change but we can never compromise quality, and this is one tradition that we will never change. Here are two generations reaffirming that promise that our father/grandfather made in 1950. #taste #CeylonTea #Quality #Taste #Goodness #Familybusiness #Promise #antioxidant #goodness Dilmah Tea #singleorigin #gardenfresh #10000teas #teataster #terroir

🙌 Las palabras de Dilhan C. The Peoples’ Market last weekend was as inspiring as we had hoped. Over 70 aspiring entrepreneurs of all ages saw brisk trade with 1,070 visitors patronising the clothing, cosmetic, ayurveda herb, food, and other stands. Our MJF Foundation Centre West was alight again with the glow of dreams bring nurtured. Peoples’ Market is important to us because our philosophy of kindness to people hinges on the dignity of the people we want to help. We saw that dignity in the eyes of youth who are part of the Foundation’s free Empower Culinary School, as they cooked, and ran their Empower Cafe, learning new skills - managing ingredients, inventory, cooking, presenting, teamwork and marketing their product. There was dignity for the differently able youth who presented their soaps, hand weaved mats, and more. There was dignity for the group of elderly ladies who delighted in showing off their embroidery and running out of stock due to the demand. This is the philosophy of a young Sri Lankan - my father, Merrill J. Fernando - who - in 1950 - had a dream that many called impossible, and through sheer determination and 35 years of effort, made his first sale of Dilmah Tea in 1985. We are blessed with the results, and like all blessings, this one needs to be shared, and so our Small Entrepreneur Programme will continue, benefiting over 2,000 aspiring entrepreneurs as they rise beyond their challenges. Thank you to all who came. Please come again to the Peoples’ Christmas Market in December. We promise you some great product, and more importantly, the privilege of being a catalyst as dreams are realised. #MerrillJFernando #FamilyBusiness #MJFFoundation #MakingtheWorldaBetterTea Dilmah Tea #PeoplesMarket #SriLanka #Entrepreneur #DifferentisnotDisabled #Kindness #EthicalBusiness #Values #dreams
