This paper argues that Sans-titre, by the choreographer Raimund Hoghe (2009), proposes that it is through a movement of release from the static forces of cultural representation that the subject may become closer to others as humans. In other words, the subject may thus build a relationship based on ethics. The analysis draws on a subjective interpretation that unfolds according to the narrative sequence of the performance, therefore trying to free itself from the neutral (and potentially simplistic) look commonly associated with traditional academic models, while at the same time raising new critical possibilities around reception aesthetics.

The way the body is considered and explored in the performing arts has assumed a growing importance, introducing new questions and cross-cutting perspectives on our understanding of the political, sociological and philosophical relevance of the body today. This book is a meeting point for these questions, bringing together a set of contributors experienced in examining the body's presence in live performances. It interweaves several disciplinary outlooks, addressing current theoretical debates on the body relating to the theory of affects, ethics, gender, age, discourse and representation. Looking at recent practice in Portugal, the volume examines several cases where the body and issues of corporeality raise questions of memory, identity, experience and existence. It opens a rare window onto the distinctive Portuguese post-colonial legacy, which has given rise to an intensified search for new forms of bodily affirmation in the world. In so doing, the book conjures up the transformative power of performing arts today: from body into Being.

Despite the late consolidation of improvisation theatre in the country, the Portuguese artistic scene has seen the emergence in the last two decades of several impro companies with different approaches – many of them acquiring significant recognition among the public. However, the mapping of this practice and its relationship with the historical‑cultural Framework with which it is necessarily linked was never done before. This article contributes to fill this gap, not only tracing its genealogy in the context of contemporary history of the performing arts in Portugal, but also in the wider context of Portuguese socio‑cultural development since the Revolution of April 25, 1974. More specifically, the research in which this article is based upon allowed us to identify a significant correlation between the process of theatrical renovation initiated by the generation of the 1990s and the precursors of this genre in Portugal.
