Today’s equinox means my hands-down favorite season is officially upon us. My autumns in New York always included a getaway to the Hudson Valley for some leaf peeping, something I dearly miss now that I live in Virginia. Maybe it’s because my formative years were spent in Vermont, but I feel most at peace in places that have a warm, woodsy feel to them—even if they’re smack in the middle of a chaotic city.
Coziness is at the heart of how Tiffany Thompson, founder of Duett Interiors, approaches design. It’s no wonder that her Instagram feed is an escapist’s paradise. The inspiration for her latest project—more on that below!—is perhaps not what you’d expect, but you can bet it will be infused with her signature mix of earthy materials and textures. I’ll let her take it from here. —Lindsey DeSimone, senior marketing manager

What I’m loving right now: This might raise a few eyebrows, but I’ve been absolutely obsessed with French butter! I promise it ties back to design—let me explain.
Why I’m loving it: Not only is it some of the best butter I’ve ever tasted, but the color butter yellow is trending right now. There is also a rich history that really resonates with me, especially as I work on inspiration for my current project—an A-frame in Connecticut. I’ve been exploring the aesthetics of vintage ski ads and chalets in the French Alps, and they were originally used by dairy cattle herders as a place to store milk and butter during the summer months. I’m channeling that same retreat-like vibe with rustic elements and organic silhouettes that are overtly cozy and inviting.

How I’d bring the look home: Channeling “a feeling” is such a hard thing for most people to navigate, so think about what people are going to say when they first visit your home and, more important, during the car ride home. The feeling you are trying to evoke is how you want that conversation in the car to go. -
Incorporate rustic elements—wood ceiling beams and accent walls, stone, natural fabrics—and choose furnishings that feature organic textures, such as shearling upholstery (above left) or wool throws.
-
Opt for deep, desaturated, warm, earthy tones like burgundy, butter yellow, deep browns, and muted blues (above right). These colors create a comforting atmosphere. I love the unexpected red theory, and I think it’s nice with this palette. It immediately makes me think of a ski resort and advanced ski routes. Add pops through accessories, side tables, or artwork.
-
Use a mix of overhead fixtures, floor lamps, and candles to mimic the cozy glow of a chalet. And consider installing candle wall sconces for an even more intimate setting.
- Start with one item. Design is fluid—maybe you take an item from another space. You’d be surprised how an object can become art or have new life in a new environment.

What’s the next…
Paint color you expect to see everywhere: Burgundy, translating from the runways to the walls. My favorites are Farrow & Ball’s Preference Red and Portola Paints’s Meritage Roman Clay. Material to get its moment: Glass bricks (above). - Trend about to take off: Butter yellow will soar for a while!
Trend you hope goes away: All-white kitchens.
Piece you’re on the hunt for: I’m trying to find a biomorphic sofa like the one that I scored for a client’s home (below). It was my dream sofa and I “gave it to them.” Only two exist, so I’m searching for the other.
Vintage score of your dreams: This 1940s Swedish rocking chair. It’s insane. Pattern you want to play with: Cowhide. Design risk you’re taking: Every decision. Our motto is “refined yet audacious.”

What’s the last…
Thing you splurged on for your home:
My custom fireplace (above left). I designed it as an early look at an upcoming collection. It’s a piece of art in and of itself.
Thing you got for a steal: Vintage stone mortars.
Gift you gave: Le Labo’s Coriandre 39. It’s their city exclusive, Mexico City, and has cilantro in it. It’s delightful!
Instagram post you saved: Spencer’s Spa. It’s a luxury day spa in New York City that looks like a badass luxury apartment.
Account you started following: Ransom & Dunn—it is a cool design studio with incredible furniture.
Photo you snapped: A photo of my labradoodle, Nas (above right). He takes up all of my phone storage. He’s also the muse for the design palette in my home.
