Skin-Gut Connection Discovered Recent research has revealed a reverse "skin-gut axis," demonstrating that disruptions in the skin can significantly impact gut health. Previously, it was understood that the gut microbiome influences other microbiomes in the body, including those of the skin, lungs, and brain. However, new evidence from researchers around Rob Knight and Richard Gallo indicates that the relationship can also work in the opposite direction. Key Findings: 1. Systemic Effects of Skin Injuries: ❎ Disruption of the dermis leads to the systemic circulation of hyaluronan and its fragments. ❎ These fragments increase the expression of intestinal defense genes Reg3 and Muc2 both in vitro and in the colons of mice. ❎ This alteration results in changes in microbial composition and behavior in the colon. 2. Impact on Gut Health: ❎ Previous studies showed that skin wounding in mice increased their sensitivity to colitis when challenged with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). ❎ In humans, this model correlates with increased incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in patients with chronic inflammatory skin disorders, such as psoriasis. 3. Current Study Comparisons: ❎ Researchers compared wounded mice with healthy controls two days post-injury. ❎ They found that circulating hyaluronan fragments, resulting from injury, induced the expression of Muc2 and Reg3 in colon epithelial cells. ❎ Shotgun metagenomic DNA sequencing revealed significant changes in the gut microbiota composition post-injury, including variations in the relative abundance of certain bacterial species and an increase in genes associated with pathogenic bacteria. ❎ Flow cytometry (FACS) measurements showed a reduction in the total bacterial count after injury. ▶ Thus, skin injury resulted in potentially negative effects on the gut microbiome and microbiota. 💡 Implications: 📌 These findings challenge the traditional view that gut inflammation primarily originates in the gut, suggesting that skin inflammation can also alter the gut microbiome. 📌 The results underscore the importance of a holistic approach in treating gut issues like IBD, taking into account the health of other epithelial tissues, such as the skin. ▶ This research highlights the interconnectedness of body systems and the need to check for overall epithelial health to ensure gut microbiome stability. To Healthcare Professionals: Please Educate Your Patients About The Microbiome! #Mysummary The "International Microbiota Observatory" 2nd edition for 2024 provides insights into global awareness and behaviors related to microbiota. Despite improvements, knowledge remains low, with only 20% of people knowing exactly what microbiota means. Awareness of different types of microbiota (intestinal, vaginal, oral, skin) has slightly increased. Positive behaviors such as maintaining a balanced diet and physical activity are prevalent, although some bad practices like excessive washing persist. The report highlights that parents and younger adults (25-44 years old) are more informed about microbiota compared to seniors. Healthcare professionals play a key role, being the primary source of reliable information for 76% of people, and their guidance significantly influences positive behavioral changes, as 95% of those informed by professionals adopt better practices to maintain a balanced microbiota. #Mythoughts Education about the importance of the microbiome was never as important as it is now. We, as a community, have the duty to educate our children as it starts with them.
