Join our LGBTQ+ Law and Policy Unit’s special campaign to highlight and advance its work supporting LGBTQ+ youth.
As “don’t say gay” laws and criminalization of the provision of gender-affirming care for young people are becoming more common across the country, New York City is regarded as a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ youth.
Still, as much as 40% of the homeless youth population is LGBTQ+, and many of these young people experience discrimination, have negative police encounters, and have inadequate access to residential programs and services.
1/3 of NYC foster youth identify as LGBTQ+. The unit is pushing the City to adopt policy that would ensure young people are placed in affirming environments with appropriate support and access to resources as they age out of care.
Legal Aid’s LGBTQ+ Law and Policy Unit is a leader in the nonprofit community; the unit conducts trainings for youth-serving nonprofits in NYC and others within LAS. The Unit relies on private support, from donors like you, to maintain and grow its advocacy, training, and direct representation services.
