La Union Strengthens Dairy Production; Establishes more Dairy Farms

The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) headed by Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David in partnership with the National Dairy Authority (NDA) led the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and the groundbreaking ceremony of the Cattle Dairy Facilities for Sangbayan Agricultural Multi-Purpose Cooperative at Barangay Sinapangan Sur, Bangar, La Union, and Sta. Cecilia Producers Cooperative at Barangay Sta. Cecilia, Aringay, La Union on October 13, 2023.

The NDA recognizes the need for development in the dairy industry of the province which is why they started implementing and expanding the dairy project, this project aims to distribute 1,100 heads of cattle and establish 22 new dairy production enterprises in the country.

La Union, as one of the provinces covered by the project, will receive 50 heads of dairy cattle and other assistance from the NDA. To fully accommodate the project, the PGLU, through the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian and the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist has allocated a total of 20 million pesos for the construction of a cow shed, a maternity pen, and a milking parlor of which the land for the establishment of said dairy facilities will be the counterpart of the beneficiaries.

Gov. Rafy also asserted her support for the project and gave her assurance to the community. She expressed, “Gusto ko din po sanang kunin ang pagkakataon na ito para pasalamatan kayong lahat for being the key players of the agriculture sector of our province. Ang inyo pong dedikasyon sa agrikultura ang dahilan kung bakit patuloy na maganda ang Agri-economy ng probinsya. Kasabay ng inyong patuloy na pakikipag La Union PROBINSYAnihan, makakaasa po kayo ng buong suporta mula sa Provincial Government of La Union.”

Also, present during the ceremony were Vice Gov. Mario Eduardo C. Ortega; Mayor Joy Pinzon-Merin of Bangar; Vice-Mayor Isabel D. Diaz (representative of Mayor Benjamin O. Sibuma) of Aringay; Dr. Leo A. Abaya of National Dairy Authority; Provincial Engineering Office; Department Heads of the Local Government of Aringay and Bangar; Members of Sta. Cecilia Producers Cooperative and Sangbayan Multi-purpose Cooperative; and Officials of Barangay Sta. Cecilia, Sinapangan Norte and Sinapangan Sur.

In line with Gov. Rafy’s vision, the PGLU commits to support cooperatives as they aim to strengthen the province’s dairy production and reduce reliance on imports. This is an additional livelihood opportunity for La Union farmers cooperatives.
