Changing regional dynamics in the Mediterranean: material culture, economy, and cult. Panel in the FIEC Conference, London, July 2019

The panel aims to rethink the implications of the concepts of 'region' and 'regionalism' in relation to material culture in the ancient Mediterranean world. Archaeologists and ancient historians have applied regional approaches to their respective field of study, in relation to either material evidence or historical traditions. Is the concept of the region useful when attempting to understand the material culture of a locality and its connections to the wider world? The papers in the panel discuss different geographical entities and their material cultures in order to explore the connections, networks, and associations between different localities. Through the examination of material evidence, we seek to enrich current debates on the creation, development, and transformations of regional dynamics of the ancient eastern Mediterranean.

‘Excavation and documentation of the Rhodian countryside and Dodecanese islands in the first millennium BC’ in Archaeological Reports 65 (2018-19) 157-175

This contribution offers an overview of recent fieldwork and museum-based projects focused on the Rhodian countryside and Dodecanese islands. The excavations conducted by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese over the past two decades, paired with the study of Rhodian collections in the Louvre and British Museum, among other museums, have developed and promoted the archaeological record of the region. The Kymissala Archaeological Research Project led by the University of the Aegean and a collaborative doctoral project investigating the British Museum’s collections from Kamiros each demonstrate the potential of revisiting historic excavations through topographical surveys and archival documentation.

'The "Spaghetti Workshop" of Rhodes: Cypriot inspirations, Rhodian alterations' in Bourogiannis, G. (ed.) Beyond Cyprus: Investigating Cypriot connectivity in the Mediterranean from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the Classical period (AURA Suppl. 9) (Athens, 2022) 389-397

One of the most recognised ceramic products of 7th century BC Rhodes, spaghetti aryballoi, were first identified during Italian excavations at Ialysos and Kamiros and by Knud Friis Johansen and have since received attention from a range of scholars. However, so far little attention has been paid to understanding their production in the context of the entire output of the “Spaghetti workshop”, which produced a far wider range of goods than simply unguent vessels. This paper explores the whole repertoire of this workshop, charting its full development – from its Cypriot inspirations to Rhodian alterations and diversification.

'Technically gifted: votive deposits from Kamiros acropolis' in Stefanakis, M., Mavroudis, G., and Seroglou, F. (eds.) Religion and Cult in the Dodecanese during the First Millennium BC (Oxford, 2023) 82-92

This article discusses two votive deposits excavated from Kamiros acropolis by Alfred Biliotti and Auguste Salzmann in the mid 19th century – ‘Kamiros Well’ and the ‘Deposit between walls D&E’. The contents of these deposits are presented and a discussion of what they tell us about the cult of Athena Kamiras during the Late Geometric and Archaic period follows. The article explores how the commercial network of Rhodes – stretching from Egypt and the Levant, to Ionia, mainland Greece and Italy – affected votive practices across the island. This includes the development of distinct practices at Kamiros, Ialysos, and Lindos, as well as the innovation of locally made votives. Both these changes express the dynamism of Rhodes’ material culture, which was continuously shaped and re-shaped through maritime connectivity.
