Congridae sunt familia anguillarum ordinis Anguilliformium. Anguillae subfamiliae Congrinarum magni pretii et saepe magni pisces esculenti sunt, cum eae subfamiliae Heterocongrinarum in coloniis habitare solent, omnibus ex abysso maris modo plantarum in horto protrudentibus (ergo garden eel 'anguilla hortensis', nomen Anglicum in usu communi).[1] Familia plus quam 180 species in 32 generibus comprehendit.
Conger conger, Congrida Europaea, est maxima familiae anguilla, quae ad 3 metra longa et pondere ad 160 chiliogrammata crescere potest.[2]
Inveniuntur Congridae in oceanis tropicis, subtropicis, temperatis in omne orbe terrarum. Proprietates manifeste distinctae inter eas sunt paucae; omnes squamis carent, plurimaeque pinnas pectorales habent. Crustaceis et piscibus parvis vescuntur. Aliarum anguillarum dissimiles, ad procreandas progenies non migrare solent.[3]
