Trejo's Tacos Machetes Its Way Into Los Angeles

Danny Trejo couldn't be happier.

Looks like the wait is finally over, as longtime Mexican-American actor Danny Trejo is just about ready to unveil his very own taco shop, Trejo’s Tacos. The menacing-looking actor has been teasing the world with his plans for a casual taco spot on La Brea for more than a year, but as of this week the place is finally ready to serve. No official opening has been stated, though they're hoping for something within the next few weeks, possibly earlier.

Partners Ash Shah and Jeff Georgino helped to bring the defunct Taco Bell property back to life just south of Olympic, but will be trading on Trejo’s name and mug in all their signage — including a tall one standing at the corner in front of the building. The theme continues on the patio, with a full-sized mural of Trejo holding a pair of hatchets while donning a blue apron, as created by Boyle Heights artist Ernesto Yerena. Naturally, he’s shirtless beneath.

That artwork does help show the playful nature of the Spacecraft-designed place, though, which is further outlined by the butcher block communal tables on the patio and colorful, bright interior. Most of the seating will be available outside, as is a small play area for kids. Again, playful is the word of the day.

As for the menu, which was designed by Daniel Mattern, expect tacos as varied as asada, fried chicken, brisket, and tofu. There will also be options for lettuce-wrapped ‘tacos’ (called Machete-style), plus salads, quesadillas, burritos, and more. Beer and wine will also be available, including a branded Trejo's Cerveza.
