Biofouling, the buildup of microorganisms, plants, algae or small animals, roughens surfaces and increases hydrodynamic drag on a ship’s hull. This drag reduces speed or requires more power to maintain speed, resulting in higher fuel consumption and increased CO2 emissions, with negative economic and environmental impacts. A thin slime layer just 0.5 mm thick, covering up to 50% of a hull, can raise CO2 emissions by 25-30%, depending on the ship's characteristics, speed and conditions. More severe biofouling, such as light calcareous growth (barnacles or tubeworms), can cause emissions to increase by up to 60% for an average container ship, while medium calcareous fouling can lead to a 90% rise. Several effective solutions for preventing and managing biofouling can significantly improve ship energy efficiency and performance. These include optimised anti-fouling coatings, marine growth prevention systems (such as ultrasonic technology) and eco-friendly in-water hull cleaning methods using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV). Adopting these technologies as part of a comprehensive hull management strategy can offer substantial benefits. While some shipowners already utilise advanced solutions, there is still considerable potential for broader application of best management practices across the industry. #HullWiper #SustainableShipping #MaritimeRegulations #UnderwaterHullCleaning #Sustainability #CarbonZero #CarbonNeutral #MarineBiofouling

The Mauritius Green Port Initiative is a comprehensive program focused on promoting environmental sustainability and responsible maritime practices within the nation's ports. Its main objectives are to reduce emissions, conserve energy, prevent pollution, and protect local marine ecosystems. A key priority is preventing the introduction of invasive aquatic species (IAS) while preserving biodiversity. The initiative also advocates for the adoption of eco-friendly technologies and practices to enhance port efficiency and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. To support these goals, Mauritius mandates the use of advanced hull cleaning equipment with reclamation systems that prevent harmful organisms from being discharged. With the support of our local partner, HullWiper’s eco-friendly hull cleaning solutions fully meet the reclamation standards set by Mauritius, ensuring that all discharged water is free from harmful organisms and in full compliance with local environmental regulations. The Mauritius Ports Authority closely oversees these operations, requiring approval before cleaning and conducting strict water sampling to ensure compliance. Vessels using eco-friendly cleaning methods benefit from reduced port dues, while non-compliance may result in the revocation of licenses. #HullWiper #SustainableShipping #MaritimeRegulations #UnderwaterHullCleaning #Sustainability #CarbonZero #CarbonNeutral #MarineBiofouling

Biofouling is the accumulation of organisms on submerged surfaces and occurs in two main forms: microfouling and macrofouling. Microfouling involves microscopic organisms like bacteria, algae, and diatoms adhering to vessel surfaces, where they form a slimy layer known as bacterial biofilms. These biofilms attract or repel other microorganisms, creating an ideal environment for their growth. Over time, the biofilm increases drag on the ship's hull, reducing fuel efficiency and causing potential hull corrosion due to acidic by-products. Once these microfouling biofilms are established, larger organisms, such as barnacles and seaweed, attach to them. This macrofouling adds weight and drag, decreases speed, and obstructs underwater systems, while also posing a risk of transferring invasive marine species into foreign waters. Proactive hull cleaning using eco-friendly solutions is essential to mitigate these effects. Regular cleaning not only prevents the costly buildup of biofouling but also ensures compliance with environmental regulations. By choosing sustainable cleaning methods, shipowners and operators can minimise their carbon footprint, reduce bunker fuel costs and improve the overall efficiency and lifespan of their vessels. #HullWiper #SustainableShipping #MaritimeRegulations #UnderwaterHullCleaning #Sustainability #CarbonZero #CarbonNeutral #MarineBiofouling

Our goal is to provide the maritime community with flexible, affordable solutions that improve vessel efficiency, reduce fuel costs and ensure compliance with biofouling regulations, all while driving a greener future for the industry. HullWiper is the only hull cleaning solution permitted by the UAE Environmental Department and DP World to perform vertical side cleaning at all quays inside Jebel Ali Port. We also provide services at Dubai Harbour and Port Rashid, as well as at key locations across the UAE. We are committed to continuous innovation, with ongoing R&D efforts focused on enhancing our technology. Our ROV can be integrated with a modular add-on advanced filtration system, including options such as UV features where necessary. These advancements aim to make our ROV units faster, more efficient and easier to maintain, reducing downtime and boosting cleaning performance. With a global footprint spanning global locations in Panama, Sweden, Denmark, Gibraltar, UAE, Mauritius, South Korea, and Australia, along with a network of third-party sites worldwide, we are making cutting-edge ROV hull cleaning technology accessible to more members of the maritime community. Through our leasing program, interested parties can lease a HullWiper ROV in locations where we don't operate and where approval has been granted for its use in port waters. This provides an affordable and straightforward opportunity, whether you’re looking to enhance an existing suite of services or launch a new business. #HullWiper #SustainableShipping #MaritimeRegulations #UnderwaterHullCleaning #Sustainability #CarbonZero #CarbonNeutral #MarineBiofouling

The shipping industry is navigating tough regulations to meet the IMO’s ambitious decarbonisation goals - 40% carbon reduction by 2030 and 70% by 2050. Key regulations like the EEXI, CII, and SEEMP, now mandatory, are driving this change. While HullWiper’s hull cleaning service already offers significant fuel savings, the industry is also exploring greener fuels. Biofuels, such as FAME and HVO, are emerging as promising alternatives, cutting down emissions and reducing the sector’s carbon footprint. However, adoption is slow due to limited supply, high costs, and infrastructure challenges. Overcoming these barriers requires industry-wide collaboration and innovative solutions. As the industry rides this green wave, HullWiper continues to play its part by saving biofuel for ship operators and owners, ensuring cleaner, more efficient operations. Hull cleaning in South Korea is strictly regulated to prevent biofouling from contaminating local waters. Our South Korean partners, with extensive experience in ROV hull cleaning, ensure full compliance with the rigorous biosecurity standards set by Australian and New Zealand maritime authorities. Their eco-friendly vessel, "Esther," was designed to transport two HullWiper ROV units to major ports like Busan, Ulsan, Pohang, Masan, Jinhae, Yeosu, and Gwangyang. By deploying two ROVs at once, they cut cleaning time in half, providing a fast, green and cost-effective solution for ship owners and operators. With Esther and the HullWiper ROVs, sustainable and efficient hull cleaning is now more accessible across South Korea’s key ports. #HullWiper #SustainableShipping #MaritimeRegulations #UnderwaterHullCleaning #Sustainability #CarbonZero #CarbonNeutral #MarineBiofouling

Maritime regulations are essential for protecting the environment, ensuring safety, and setting global standards. The GloFouling project tackles the spread of invasive species through better biofouling management and control, while the GloMEEP initiative drives energy efficiency in the maritime sector, fostering sustainable practices. The Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) plays an important role in reducing CO2 emissions from older vessels by improving their operational efficiency. The Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) further supports global climate goals by encouraging ships to lower their carbon intensity. The AFS Convention targets anti-fouling systems to protect marine life and human health by preventing harmful organisms from attaching to ship hulls. Additionally, proper record-keeping ensures compliance and continuous improvement. Collectively these, and other industry related regulations and guidelines, work together to reduce environmental impact, improve safety and tackle the challenges of climate change and the threat to marine biodiversity.
