Integrating Indigenous voices in global #ClimateAction 🌎 GCF recently hosted the 5th Indigenous Peoples Advisory Group (IPAG) meeting to discuss ways to enhance Indigenous Peoples' access to climate finance. The meeting sparked dialogues between IPAG members and GCF's leadership and programming teams to advance more inclusive climate finance strategies.

Pacific Small Island Developing States (Pacific SIDS) are grappling with unique challenges that demand tailor-made solutions. GCF is committed to supporting the Pacific SIDS build better now by re-engineering the way we work to deliver climate finance faster and more efficiently. To date, GCF has invested USD 622 million (USD 1.6 billion with co-financing) in the region. On the margins of #PIFLM53 in Tonga this week, GCF Head of Vulnerability and Head of Communications Stephanie Speck and GCF Regional Manager for Asia-Pacific Diane McFadzien engaged with partners to strengthen initiatives on early warning systems and anticipatory actions. They also met with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape MP, and officials from Nauru, Niue, and Tuvalu to strengthen #climateaction collaboration and share updates on GCF’s progress in streamlining processes and focusing on ambitious climate programmes and partnerships.

The Government of Tonga alongside the Green Climate Fund + UNDP today signed the project document for the Tonga Coastal Resilience Project. During his recent visit to Tonga, UN Secretary-General António Guterres witnessed firsthand the profound impacts of climate change on local communities. As global sea levels rise at unprecedented rates, a surge in finance and leadership is critical to help communities in Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) preserve their way of life. "We need a surge in funds to deal with the surging seas," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his press conference on sea level rise in Tonga. ➡  https://g.cf/3AOGtgW The UNSG is in Tonga this week to hear directly from local communities about the challenges they face due to rising sea levels. Yesterday, on the Hahake coast in Tongatapu, he met with community leaders, listened to their concerns, and explored a GCF-UNDP project aimed at bolstering coastal resilience. To date, GCF has approved over USD 622 million for 25 projects in the Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS), focusing on enhancing local climate solutions and early warning systems. These initiatives are critical as Pacific SIDS stand on the frontlines of the climate crisis. I have enjoyed a productive visit to the Republic of Korea, where I met with Mr. Yi Han-Kyung, Vice Minister of Interior and Safety, with Mr. Yoo Jeong-bok, Mayor of Incheon City, and with Ms. Mafalda Duarte, Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund, amongst others. It is encouraging to see such dedication and support for disaster risk reduction efforts, and UNDRR looks forward to building on our fruitful collaboration with all these important stakeholders. The Republic of Korea is a leader in DRR and resilience building, and a strong supporter of global DRR initiatives. The Green Climate Fund does vital work in supporting developing countries meet their NDC ambitions towards low-emissions and climate-resilient pathways - and there are numerous opportunities for UNDRR and the GCF to work together towards a more resilient future.

On the Hahake coast of Tongatapu this afternoon, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres heard from local communities about their challenges, and saw firsthand the devastating impact of climate change on the community's coastline. The Hahake coastline is one area of the Kingdom of #Tonga that will benefit from a range of adaptation measures via the US$23.9 million Green Climate Fund Tonga Coastal Resilience Project. As one community member emotively said, "listen to us, consult with us, as we're the experts of livelihood on these shores."

The Nile Delta, home to millions, is under threat from rising sea levels and increasingly powerful storms. With GCF and UNDP's support, in collaboration with government partners in Egypt 🇪🇬, coastal defence structures and integrated management strategies are developed to fortify the Nile and the communities that call the Delta home.
