Biden addresses the nation about “the idea of America” being in our hands
WASHINGTON D.C. (KION-TV) -- Biden addressed the nation on Wednesday to discuss the variety of challenges facing the nation in addition to a formal goodbye to his presidency, as he doesn't seek to run for a second presidential term.
"It's been the honor of my life to serve as your president," said President Biden directly to the camera from the Oval Office. "This sacred task at perfecting our union is not about me... it's about 'we the people.'"
Biden attributed many achievements to the four years' worth of work as President of the United States. From lower costs for families, defending the economy, calling out hate, protecting kids from gun violence, fighting climate crisis and working to end cancer, to name a few.
"The defense of democracy is more important than any title," Biden said as he pointed to the U.S.'s current historical "affliction point."
Biden leaned heavily on the American people to show up at the polls in November because "our decisions now will affect the moments to come," he said. "Do we still live in honesty, decency and respect; freedom and democracy? Does Character in public life still matter?"
Biden urged the American people, too, to unite and protect our democracy before referencing the passing of a torch to a new generation of leaders. "It's the way forward," he said.
He mentioned lifting younger voices and continuing his work as president to the best of his ability for the next six months. Biden also referenced Benjamin Franklin with a quote: "'Whether we keep our republic is now in your hands."'
Since his inauguration, Biden says that he's helped in establishing the "strongest economy in the world," lowering the cost [of healthcare], reducing the violent crime rate to a 50-year low and closing the racial wealth gap to the lowest its been in 20 years.
"I ran four years ago because I believe--and still do--that the soul of America was at stake," said Biden. "I made [the country] more powerful and more united than in any other time in history."
Biden called attention to his ability to assemble an administration "to look like America," with vast diversity and equity.
He spoke about coming from humble roots and defying all odds, "but here I am," he said. "There are ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things... we are a good people."
"I'd like to thank our great Vice President Kamala Harris," said Biden. "Now, the choice is up to you, the American people."
With a heartfelt salutation, Biden finished his speech with a direct statement to the American people: "I hope you have some idea how grateful I am to all of you."
