Working with vulnerable children, youth, their families, and their communities.

About us

In 2003 M’Lop Tapang (MT) was created by a small group of foreigners and locals. It began as a simple initiative to feed and offer safety to six children who slept under a large Tapang tree on the beach every night, and who were extremely vulnerable to exploitation, but quickly blossomed into a much wider program. Today we work with over 5,000 children, youth and families in the Sihanoukville area, providing disadvantaged children and families access to the learning tools, specialized services, resources, and opportunities they need to build a better future. As M’Lop Tapang continues to grow the purpose of the organization remains to provide protection, just as the tree provided protection to those young children years ago who sheltered under its branches.

Football is wildly popular among the children and youth at M’Lop Tapang. Out of 100 students surveyed (50 boys and 50 girls, average age of 11 years old), 94% reported that participating in sports activities helped them make new friends—just like these two champions on the field.

Our street based outreach and medical teams frequently collaborate to provide informational sessions at construction sites where many families live. These sessions include details about M’Lop Tapang’s services, and our medical team also offers basic medical care. Our goal is to ensure that the children at these sites are safe and attending school, so we make it a point to share all the services M’Lop Tapang provides.

In Cambodia, 32% of married women report having experienced emotional, physical, or sexual violence from their partners, and 20% of women aged 15-49 have faced physical violence since the age of 15 (sources: Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey 2021-22 and the UNFPA Cambodia publication on the National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against Women 2019-2023). Yesterday, in collaboration with local authorities, our Child Protection team delivered domestic violence awareness training in Prey Nob District, just outside the city of Sihanoukville. Simultaneously, we conducted a small “Good Touch, Bad Touch” session with a few of the youngsters.

This week kicks off our annual training at M’Lop Tapang, and we’re starting with the most important topic: Child Protection. This compulsory training ensures our staff are well-prepared and informed about safeguarding practices. It’s far from boring—plenty of interaction and even testing to make sure everyone is engaged and confident in their knowledge.

On International Youth Day, we’re reminded that youth participation is more than just important—it’s a fundamental child right. We value the unique perspectives and fresh ideas that young people bring, recognizing their significant contributions to society and the difference they make every day. Happy International Youth Day!
