The international court and tribunal system is being used to compel governments and fossil fuel producers to address the #ClimateCrisis. The Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda has been struck by warming waters and rising sea levels. It is now requesting the International Court of Justice to weigh in on the obligations of states to take concrete #ClimateAction: https://lnkd.in/dRuTeBhq

Artificial Intelligence can support #ClimateAction by identifying pollution hotspots and predicting climate patterns - but used to create misinformation it can easily become a roadblock. This International #DayofDemocracy, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasizes the potential of AI to enhance public participation, equality, and ensure accountability, if used in a democratic framework. Amplifying science and encouraging the voices of those on the frontline of environmental issues is crucial for environmental justice and combatting the climate crisis. Here are AI solutions from UNEP that can contribute to achieving environmental goals: https://lnkd.in/dd4-KVrz

“Now is the time for us all to deliver,” Inger Andersen told the Committee of Permanent Representatives to UNEP this week, pointing to a critical period of environmental diplomacy with events like the United Nations Summit of the Future, three important meetings of parties to climate and environmental conventions, and negotiations for a #PlasticsTreaty: https://bit.ly/3B26tWo #COP16, #COP29 #INC5 #OurCommonFuture

The ocean is hotter than ever. Marine heatwaves have doubled in frequency, and have become longer-lasting, more intense & extensive since the 1980s, according to the IPCC. Hotter marine temperatures can have a devastating effect on marine life. It’s estimated 25 to 50% of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed, and that all coral reefs will be dead by 2100 if greenhouse gas emissions are not drastically cut. Urgent #ClimateAction is needed to #SaveOurOcean & ensure a sustainable future for all. https://lnkd.in/dufWbmq9 estimates that 25 to,such as storms and hurricanes

Reducing methane pollution is among the most efficient ways to slow global warming. However, recent reports indicate that methane emissions are rising at alarming rates. There are mechanisms in place to cut methane emissions. UNEP is providing support systems to help countries develop roadmaps, policies, and regulations and to provide countries and companies with credible data to drive emissions reductions. https://lnkd.in/emvgZu7s

Concerned by the disappearance of flamingos that once flocked the mangroves, a core childhood memory, Angolan environmental activist Fernanda Renée Samuel, is taking hashtag #ClimateAction and working to conserve mangroves. These efforts have earned her international recognition. In 2020, she was selected as a finalist for the UNEP Young Champions of the Earth award. The Convention on Wetlands also recognized her contributions by naming her a Young Wetland Champion in 2022 and appointing her as a global advocate for wetlands. “Global average sea levels are rising at rates unprecedented in the past 3,000 years.” - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres calling attention to a crisis of humanity’s own making. The reason for sea level rise is clear, greenhouse gases, overwhelmingly generated by burning fossil fuels, are cooking our planet. This will lead to widespread havoc to coastal communities if action is not taken soon. Ahead of a high-level meeting this month, this new UN technical brief provides a summary of the latest science on sea-level rise and its present-day and projected impacts: https://lnkd.in/gRxzVSkc

Rising sea levels pose an existential threat to the Maldives, the lowest-lying nation on Earth. The nation has collaborated with UNEP to create a national strategy to adapt to climate change, which includes early warning systems for climate change-related disasters, to guarantee its resilience and adaptation, and to protect its already scarce potable water supply. UNEP also supports the nation's efforts to switch to renewable energy sources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
