Mental Health Care

Shamiri means “thrive”. We envision a future where young people actualize their life potential.

About us

Shamiri means “thrive” in Kiswahili. We are a data-driven public benefit organization that combines cutting edge social science research with a deep contextual knowledge of the communities that we serve to build a future where young people can thrive. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Shamiri was founded in 2018 at Harvard University by award-winning Kenyan entrepreneur and community – mobilizer Tom Osborn and rising global mental health research Katherine Venturo-Conerly. Since our founding in 2018, we have worked with more than 7,500 youths in secondary schools across Kenya. Through our work, young people have experienced a 40% improvement in mental health and wellbeing, a 14% improvement in social relations, and a 3% improvement in academic grades. Our goal is to bring Shamiri to 100,000 youths by the end of 2023.

We celebrated Shamiri Institute turning five. 🎉🎈 It was an opportunity to reflect on how far we've come. It has been quite the journey growing from our first intervention with 2,000 students to reaching 100,000 students this year! We curated an art exhibit with key photos and artefacts from each year and a panel discussion with team members reflecting on them. 🚀 Thank you to everyone who has supported us thus far, we look forward to reaching 1 million youth by 2027. #Shamiri #ShamiriAt5

🗣 Shamiri Institute is a new addition to the Mulago portfolio 🗣 In Sub-Saharan Africa, 50% of youth face mental health challenges, and in Kenya alone, 5 million young people suffer from mental health disorders. Many adolescents have little-to-no resources to turn to. Shamiri Institute — led by Tom Osborn — has developed an effective, low-cost solution to this problem by tapping into the power of adolescent peers. Their school-based, group intervention is delivered by recent high school graduates and helps high schoolers build resilience to tackle the everyday stressors of poverty and improve their mental health. The beauty is Shamiri Institute’s approach seamlessly integrates into high school settings. They recruit and train recent graduates to deliver an evidence-based curriculum focused on growth mindset, gratitude, and value affirmation to groups of adolescents. Between sessions, students deepen their understanding through thoughtfully designed take-home exercises. Clinical supervisors provide oversight to ensure that more severe cases receive the necessary attention. We’re excited to support Shamiri Institute’s mission to provide effective mental health solutions and improve the lives of young people in Sub-Saharan Africa. Welcome to the Mulago portfolio. 🇰🇪 We stand with Kenyan youth 🇰🇪: When we founded Shamiri, our vision was clear: "to build a future where young people in Kenya and across Sub-Saharan Africa could realize their full potential." We saw the incredible promise in Kenya's youthful population—half of the country was under 19 when we started Shamiri. We recognized the urgent need to provide African youth with a pathway to independent, fulfilling lives. Without this, we faced what I feared would be a ticking "time bomb." The recent events in Kenya have only highlighted this urgency. Young Kenyans are frustrated and disheartened. They feel blocked from actualizing their dreams by government failures, systemic corruption, and institutionalized injustices. Over the past couple of weeks, we've witnessed young Kenyans taking to the streets in peaceful protest across the country. Among them were many Shamirians—our Fellows, Supervisors, Team Members, and even myself. We’ve been inspired by the collective action and resolve of Kenyan youth, standing together in hope for a better future. Tragically, these protests have been met with senseless violence. Many young people have lost their lives, some of them children and adolescents. Some of our team members have witnessed this horror firsthand; many of us have seen it unfold across social media, TV, and personal messages. The voices of young Kenyans have been met with brutality instead of dialogue. We mourn with their families and loved ones, their communities, and the entire nation. The loss of young lives leaves a profound scar on our collective consciousness. Even as these horrors continue, we must acknowledge the mental health toll these events impose on individuals and communities. Streams of traumatic images and reports breed fear, helplessness, trauma, anxiety, and deep sadness—burdens that may take months and years to overcome, if ever. We founded Shamiri to create a future where African youth can thrive. These recent events show us just how far we are from that vision. As an organization, we must reflect on how we can best serve the young people of Kenya. Enough is enough. Kenyan youth deserve a future of dignity and a future where they can actualize their full potential. We stand with the young people of Kenya. To thriving African youth. Tom Osborn On behalf of all Shamirians

Making mental health affordable and accessible for all. #decolonizethemind

🌍 How frustrating and worthwhile it is to be a young person with strong convictions about the planet and what’s destroying it. Often, we don’t see eye to eye, despite our shared interest in making things better. Our viewpoints can feel radically different, influenced by culture, class, race, and gender, making us look at the same problem but see it through different lenses. 📚 In my upcoming book, What We Can’t Burn, I share the story of my time running GreenChar and my experience at Harvard University during the Harvard fossil fuel divestment movement. It’s a story of striving to make a difference, forging and maintaining friendships as the world shifts under our feet, and finding beauty amidst the chaos. ✨ Kennedy Odede calls this “an essential reading,” and I am excited to share it with the world when it comes out this August. 📖 Pre-orders are now available via Westwood Press and anywhere books are sold in the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe. Kenya pre-orders coming soon! https://lnkd.in/d-YxS5Q7
