Since 2023, we've run a mushroom farming project for smallholder farmers in Burundi. 🍄 The project gives farmers access to credit for farm supplies and other materials, capacity-building training on effective farming practices, and market access opportunities. Farmers like Jeanine Nshimirimana, who is a member of the Sangwe Bwoga Cooperative and lives on Bwoga Hill in Burundi’s Gitega Commune, benefit from the project. “Last season, One Acre Fund’s field officer walked us through all the farming stages and I learned a lot about mushroom farming. We used to harvest only 20 kg; now I can harvest between 300 - 500 kg,” says Jeanine. “Access to the market has helped me a lot. Mushrooms are more profitable than beans! A kilo of beans is less than 3,000 francs ($1), while mushrooms fetch 5,000 francs ($2)." Read more on our blog: https://loom.ly/lC_0zPg

In 2023, we purchased avocados from 2,271 Rwandan farmers as part of our avocado market access program. 🥑 The program helps farmers like Odette build resilience against financial shocks and improve their livelihoods by helping them access better markets to sell their harvests. 🌱

90% of Burundi's rural population live on majestic - but steep - hillsides. These hillsides present challenges to smallholder farmers like Asterie Ntahonvukiye, who are at risk from land degradation as heavy rains caused by climate change wash away soil and cause landslides. 🧑🏿🌾 A 2017 Country Environmental Analysis found that the country loses 1.6% of its GDP annually to land degradation and has lost 5.2% of its land area to soil degradation since 2020. [World Bank Advisory Services and Analytics (ASA)]/[World Bank Group] Through climate-resilience trainings provided by One Acre Fund, Asterie has been able to safeguard her land from degradation . 💪🏿 She now contours her fields, plants trees that reinforce the soil, and makes and applies her own compost which helps restore soil nutrients and moisture.🌱 "The training that the One Acre Fund program has given me in contouring and organic manure production has enabled me to improve the quality of my arable land and become more resilient to climate change. Now I have a large harvest and sell the surplus to generate income and set up new projects," says Asterie. In 2023, we partnered with the HEINEKEN Africa Foundation to reach 20,000 farmers like Asterie in Burundi by 2026 to empower them to increase their incomes and build climate resilience. 🌿 Learn more about how climate-smart farming is revitalizing farming for women smallholders in Burundi on our blog. Fifty to sixty percent of farmers we work with across sub-Saharan Africa are women. We work hard to support these farmers and provide them with the support and training they need to grow. 👩🏿🌾 The women we work with are increasing food security and prosperity, as well as being business owners, entrepreneurs and farmers. 💪🏿 But they're not just building businesses for their benefit – by reinvesting up to 90% of their earnings back into their households they're breaking the cycle of poverty while supporting their communities too. Join us in celebrating women farmers this #AfricanWomensDay. 💚
