Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) is a Multi-Speciality National Teaching and Referral Hospital serving the Western half of Kenya (23 counties), Eastern Uganda, Southern Sudan, Northern Tanzania, and Democratic Republic of Congo amongst other areas with a population of over 25 million. CORE MANDATE The functions of the Hospital is enumerated in the Legal Notice No. 78 of 12th June 1998 under State Corporations Act, Cap 457 Laws of Kenya, are:  To receive patients on referral from other Hospitals or Institutions within or outside Kenya for specialized Healthcare.  To provide facilities for Medical Education for Moi University and Research either directly or through other cooperating health institutions.  To provide facilities for education and training in Nursing and other health and allied Institutions.  To participate as a National Referral Hospital in National Health Planning.   • PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE ON HEALTH VISITS MTRH ON AN INSPECTION TOUR The Parliamentary Committee on Health yesterday October 11, 2024 visited Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on an Inspection tour. The Committee led by Chair Hon. (Dr.) Robert Pukose began with the tour of critical services reviewing the Social Health Authoriry (SHA) transition; Renal Dialysis services, Oncology & Radiothetapy services, ongoing projects; installation of the 1.5. Tesla MRI machine, newly commissioned Financial Services Centre housing the Social Health Authority- Eldoret Branch, MTRH Staff Pensions and Shamiri Sacco; Spine Theatre, Shoe4Africa Children’s Adella Rome Home, Harry J. Dyer Burns Unit, Julie Ann Perry Peadiatric Cancer Centre and Medical ICU. The Committee took time to review the SHA transition process and witnessed one-on-one sessions as members of the public registered. They lauded MTRH for leading the way in transition to SHA and confirmed that no patient had been denied service. The Committee urged SHA to move with speed in sensitizing the public, registration and ensure the system is seamless. Areas deliberated on during the debriefing meeting at the CEO’s Boardroom, included; critical medical equipment, Human Resources for Health (HRH) and financial allocation. The CEO , Dr. Philip Kirwa, thanked the Committee for the continued support extended to MTRH. The Committee was impressed by the quality services offered at MTRH and the level of cleanliness. Further, they lauded outreaches to counties aimed at disease prevention and early detection. They, however, urged MTRH to scale up the outreaches to all counties within its nucleus. The Parliamentary Committee on Health was received by the MTRH Board and Hospital Management Team.

  • MTRH COMMEMORATES WORLD SIGHT DAY Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) today joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Sight Day, 2024 at Memorial Grounds. World Sight Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October, is a global event meant to draw attention to blindness and vision impairment, the 2024 theme is : “Love your Eyes" with a special focus on child eye health. The event was marked by a walk through Eldoret City which was flagged off by the CEO, Dr. Philip Kirwa. The CEO encouraged all to love their eyes and protect children. "Your eyes are the window to the world," he added. Dr. Kirwa also urged the public to gift needy patients through cornea donation when their time on earth comes to an end. The team sensitized all to love their eyes; go for regular eye checkups to prevent needless loss of sight. Parents and caregivers were encouraged to talk to their children on prevention of eye injuries occasioned by playing particularly with sharp objects. The Eye Unit offered free screening, and individuals requiring additional care were referred to the Ophthalmology Department. Others in attendance were HMT members who included Dr. Owen Menach, Senior Director, Clinical Services, Dr. Ernest Ollando, Pediatric Ophthalmologist and Staff. The partners included: the Ministry of Health, Operation Eyesight Universal, Fred Hollows Foundation, Knowledge Spring Training Institute, Essilor Kenya, Alice Pharmaceuticals, KMTC, COECSA amongst others.

  • CS CO-OPERATIVES AND MSMES DEVELOPMENT HON. OPARANYA VISITS MTRH SHAMIRI SACCO The Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, FCPA, EGH, yesterday visited Shamiri Sacco. Shamiri Sacco draws membership from employees of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) and AMPATH. Hon. Oparanya who was accompanied by Uasin Gishu Governor H.E. Hon. Jonathan Bii said good management is the core structure of Sacco movement success. He called on Shamiri leadership to continue upholding transparent management culture in the affairs of the Sacco. The CS emphasized that members' education is one efficient vehicle to empower members on all businesses of the society. "This is one chance available to members for exercising property rights in the society. He said it is the principle of co-operatives for members to know their rights," Oparanya said. To achieve sound management, directors should be trained on co-operative management. Operanya said the ministry will soon roll out Sacco curriculum for directors of cooperatives countrywide. He said what makes cooperatives fail is paying dividends out of losses. He advised the Shamiri leadership to stay clear from that direction and continuously safeguard members' interests. MTRH CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa said Shamiri Sacco is the financial pillar for Hospital Staff which provides affordable rates compared to commercial banks. He said its tremendous growth is attributed to sound management practices. While making his remarks, the Governor H.E. Hon. Jonathan Bii emphasized on members education especially during these tough economic times. Present during the CS visit were; Shamiri Sacco Chairman Mr. Robert Rotich and CEO Shamiri Sacco Ms.Pamela Makiya. The delegation also included; Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Dr. Eddyson Nyale, CEC Sports and Culture Eng. Lucy Ngendo Njoroge,CEC Agriculture Dr.Edward Sawe, CEC Lands and Urban Planning Dr. Janet Kosgei, CO Trade & Investment Victorian Kapkiyai , and CO Co- operatives & Enterprise Ruth Samoei among other dignitaries.
