Mashujaa Day honors the heroes and heroines who played a significant role in the struggle for Kenya's independence, as well as those who have contributed to the nation's progress and well-being in various fields. Initially, October 20th was marked as Kenyatta Day in honor of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president, and other leaders detained by the British colonial government in 1952. After the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the holiday was renamed Mashujaa Day to honour a broader range of heroes, beyond just those involved in the independence struggle.

--- Corporate Governance - Key takeaways from our recent training on the impact of family disputes on governance of family companies: - Family dynamics play a key role in determining effectiveness of management and long-term sustainability of family businesses. - Integration of next generation requires careful planning with consideration given to ensuring the next generation is suitably qualified to lead while reducing disruption to existing employees and management teams. - Establishing a criterion for managing performance by family members is crucial, given their unique role as stakeholders in the business. - Important to adopt corporate governance frameworks that instill appropriate mechanisms to streamline decision-making and ensure adequate solutions for problems that may occur. - Consideration should be given to mediation as an optimal method of dispute resolution in family matters given its amicable and collaborative process. - Having in place a business succession plan will enure smooth transition of ownership and leadership of the business in the event of retirement or demise of a family member. Thank you to my fellow panelists Gladys Mwangi, Lewis Ndonga and our moderator Vanessa Mugo for an insightful and thought-provoking discussion. --- FMC Learning + Development #corporate #familybusiness
