Our Technical Officer, Sandra Akumu & Technical Assistant, Kobugabe Michelle , participated in a two-day workshop on Risk Management & Treaty Negotiations in Non-Life Insurance Practices organized by East Africa Reinsurance Company Limited at Protea Hotel Kampala Skyz. Key Take aways: Day One: The Risk Management Process focused on understanding that risk management is an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. It involves several stages, including: • Identification of potential risks. • Assessment & evaluation of these risks. • Implementing strategies to monitor & mitigate identified risks. Day Two: Treaty Negotiations in Insurance highlighted critical factors insurers should consider when negotiating treaty terms with reinsurance companies. Key insights included: • The capacity required by insurers when negotiating treaties. • The importance of the management's attitude towards risk. For risk-averse companies, it is crucial to buy more risk cover to safeguard against uncertainties. • A significant point emphasized was the relationship between retention & growth; the higher the retention, the quicker the insurance company grows. This workshop provided a platform for insurers & reinsurers to share valuable knowledge & strategies that better the insurance industry in risk management and treaty negotiation practices.
