🌎💡 Another incredible global gathering is wrapping up and we are leaving Cali with new knowledge, strengthened partnerships, enhanced skills, and connections that light the path forward! This week at COP16, CGIAR’s participation centered on creating meaningful dialogues and actions for biodiversity conservation. A huge thank you to our colleagues on the ground from the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT for leading the charge in vital discussions. This week's discussions revolved around Empowering communities, Harnessing agroecology, agrobiodiversity and family farming, Creating common ground on regenerative agriculture, Advancing the biodiversity agenda through seed systems and nature farmers rights, etc. At the Montpellier Process high-level event “Pooling collective intelligence for action”, leaders from various sectors—including environment, health, and agriculture—shared insights on unlocking local-to-global action for greater impact. 🌿 As we move forward, we’re excited to transform these discussions into impactful actions that protect biodiversity for future generations. 🌍In rural Mali, women play a vital role in rice cultivation but face barriers to resources like land and climate-resilient seeds. The Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project, led by AfricaRice, is changing this by providing women cooperatives with high-yield, climate-resistant seed varieties. This initiative boosts rice production and empowers women economically. Local cooperatives are now thriving, with profits supporting community development and reducing reliance on external seeds. 🌍 Exciting progress in food sovereignty! Forbes recently highlighted the inspiring work of Sierra Leone's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Henry Mussa Kpaka, whose leadership and vision for a resilient, self-sustaining food system is a model for transformative impact. Minister Kpaka is also a founding member and co-chair of the Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation (ACF), an initiative hosted by CGIAR with generous support from Norway. This year at UNGA, we were thrilled to meet ACF members and announce the establishment of the ACF secretariat, a critical step toward fostering sustainable food systems worldwide. 🌳Women are key custodians of biodiversity, especially in rural and agricultural communities, where they lead sustainable management and conservation efforts. However, gender power imbalances still limit their role in decision-making. At COP16, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT calls for stronger gender-responsive strategies in biodiversity protection. By applying the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, we can improve women's roles and conservation efforts globally. With 60 years of presence across Africa, CGIAR has established 90 labs, employed 4,000 dedicated staff, and partnered with over 1,500 local organizations—investing $450 million annually to strengthen food systems on the continent. Together with key partners from France and Morocco, CGIAR is at the forefront of advancing food security.🇲🇦🇫🇷 Enhanced collaboration and investment, especially in infrastructure, research, and innovation hubs, will enable CGIAR to deliver scalable, sustainable solutions that address Africa’s unique agricultural challenges.
