In favour of a Green New Deal for Africa . Adding biodiversity intactness to the alter pathways. We need our iconic wildlife as well as our renewable energy, our factories and our cities. Why: because running an advanced chemistry materials lab and being able to show a photo of elephants and giraffes walking by is bragging rights you don't get anywhere else but Africa! No this does not happen in our cities, but, maybe we can figure out how to peacefully co-exist in peri-urban locations. https://lnkd.in/df-HqqCa ...findings suggest that explosive growth in Africa’s greenhouse gas emissions in the next 30 years is unlikely. This is because under a low-growth scenario, Africa will reduce emissions. In the mid- and green-growth scenarios, Africa’s emissions would represent only 4%-13% of the planned carbon savings in major economies. [Researchers found] that only a high-growth scenario without climate-conscious development will mean that Africa’s greenhouse gas emissions grow so much that they negatively affect global efforts to stop climate change. But even this impact would be less than that from China, India and Indonesia until at least 2030. Recent trends from 2010-2020 show that 26 of the 47 African countries studied are leaning towards low- or green-growth scenarios. This includes the major emitters like South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria. However, [the] study also found that low emissions growth in many African countries is primarily due to low economic growth. This means that if economic growth accelerates, emissions will rise – unless carbon and energy intensity trends are addressed via a Green New Deal for Africa. This means that economic development plans must make sure that climate mitigation efforts are front and centre, especially in the 19 African countries which will account for 80%-90% of the region’s future emissions.

Here are some additional reasons why: Less Pesticides: Reduces the cost of agrochemical inputs. Increases yields so that crops have more unique flavour from cross pollination. Have you noticed different flavours of honey - that is cross pollination. Did you know dragonflies (odonata) are also pollinators and eat pests on crops? Integrated Pest Management is a practice that teaches you how to use local biodiversity to ensure the ecosystem is healthy for plant growth. Odonata also do not like polluted water. When you see dragonflies you know the water most likely has less pollutants such as heavy metals and garbage. In dense urban cities like Nairobi, we often forget what a health and natural ecosystem looks like. Kirika Kivuti is collecting data in Upper Hill District Association's Green Park. Our goal is to understand how urban regreening efforts restore biodiversity intactness in Kenya's built urban environment. The problem with eliminating green space on urban plots is that there are no habitats for the busy bees, dragonflies, and other pollinators (e.g. birds) to connect the web of life between crops. We need more pollinator highways in urban areas. Pollinator highways are plant habitats that enable insects and wildlife (e.g. birds) to travel so they can do their work. Without pollinator highways, the cost of food production will be more than we can afford to pay, greenhouses are expensive compared to nature based solutions. Less Fertilizers: Reduces the cost of agrochemical inputs. Increases yields so that crops have more nutrient value (also known as nutrient density) per kg. Have you noticed leaves on crops turning brown and thought it was due to pests or climate variability? Did you know this also happens when you apply too much fertilizer? Dr. Mildred Airo is working on understanding how the silicon content in biochar made by Co-Regen's Aarti Shah and Dries Roobroeck can be increased. Alice Muchugi and the CIFOR-ICRAF team will assist with verification on urban agroforestry. Silicon enhances photosynthesis in plants, it also makes plant tissue stronger and therefore makes the plants more resistant to pests. Biochar enhances carbon sequestration in soils. You have heard carbon rich soils are dark. This is not only due to carbon but also to organic microbes and fungi. Biochar remineralizes the soil and can be made from both organic and construction waste (as long as the waste is low in toxic chemicals and heavy metals).
