Integrated Cancer Research Foundation of Kenya reposted this
Thrilled to share that the second issue of our newsletter, ONCOAFRICA is OUT!!! ONCOAFRICA is a newsletter by Integrated Cancer Research Foundation of Kenya aimed at highlighting emerging cancer research and management. Following on from my article on "Why is cancer so hard to treat?" in the first issue of ONCOAFRICA, which highlighted the need for precision medicine in cancer treatment, in this second issue I report on a stakeholder conference I organised with Jeremmy Okonjo, on Cancer Genomics Data sharing in Kenya. The subject of ethnic diversity in cancer genomics studies is currently a hot topic, and has led to a surge of cancer genomics studies being conducted in the African continent. Great as this may be, frameworks governing genomic data sharing are still lacking in countries such as Kenya. Thus, the conference brought together experts from Kenya, South Africa and the UK, to exchange knowledge on best practices of cancer genomics data sharing and its potential to drive innovation in cancer research, diagnosis and treatment in Kenya. We'd like to thank all the speakers (Anita Grigoriadis, David Wedge, Dr Francis Makokha (PhD), Allan Njau, Robert Karanja, PhD, HN Gumede-Moeletsi, Sharifah Sekalala, Christine J. Boinett, Ph.D, Amaka Vanni, Ph.D, Karen Ambrose, Helen Oliver, Dr Jolynne Mokaya and Judith Murungi) and conference delegates for their valuable contribution during the conference.
