BURN has secured a $15 million investment from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to help fast-track the distribution of our IoT-enabled ECOA Induction Cooker (IDC) to over 1 million households in East Africa. BURN has already brought our unique Pay-As-You-Cook electric cooking solution to thousands of households in Kenya and Tanzania that were previously relying on traditional charcoal stoves. This investment will help us transition over a million low-income households to cooking with electricity, allowing them to cook on grids that are 80-95% powered by renewable energy. Our IoT/SIM-enabled ECOA Induction Cooker generates the highest-integrity Gold Standard MMECD carbon credits. Working with Cup Of Uji , BURN has provided stoves to three school kitchens in Kajiado County (Kenya) Isinya Primary, Kumpa Holy Mothers, and Kajiado Township. Our ECOA Pro series is designed for cooking at scale. Institutions can now use BURN stoves available in firewood, briquette, and LPG models and multiple capacities (60, 100, 200, 300, and 400 liters). These stoves reduce wood consumption and carbon emissions while generating Gold Standard carbon credits using methodologies like TPDDTEC and MMCED. BURN aims to improve cooking conditions, save fuel costs and even subsidize food costs for schools across Africa by reinvesting a portion of the carbon credit revenues back to schools.

BURN stoves offer quantifiable economic, environmental, and health benefits! Three years after their first randomized control study, which found that BURN stoves save families $119 per year,  Dr. Susanna Berkouwer and Dr. Joshua Dean revisited the households to measure the long-term impact of the stoves. The follow-up study revealed that BURN stoves not only reduce indoor air pollution that causes respiratory symptoms but contribute substantial economic and environmental benefits. By replacing traditional stoves with our highly efficient models, charcoal consumption is reduced by nearly 39%, which translates to substantial financial savings for families in Kenya. The study also proves that carbon subsidies are essential to incentivize clean cooking adoption among urban low-income earners. Even after 3.5 years, ownership is higher among those who were offered a higher subsidy for the stove than among those who were offered a lower subsidy. Adoption of improved and clean cookstoves remains among the most cost-effective ways to reduce carbon emissions, with each cookstove reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 3.5 tons per year, making the solution affordable, scalable, and highly impactful.  BURN produces a range of digitally - monitored electric cookers, biomass stoves, and LPG stoves that generate high-integrity carbon credits. You can read more about the follow-up study in this Chicago Booth Article (https://lnkd.in/dCHraa4T), and find the full study here https://lnkd.in/dD9yj7ag

BURN participated in the Clean Cooking Dialogue in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, where we showcased our clean cooking appliances to key stakeholders, including Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Dotto Biteko.  Our Country Manager, John Mtui, took part in a panel discussion where he talked about BURN’s commitment to transitioning Tanzanian households to clean cooking, including our investment in the local assembly of our ECOA Induction Stoves in Kawe.  The ECOA Induction stove reduces carbon emissions by 2-3.5 tonnes annually and utilizes cellular-enabled IoT technology for real-time electricity monitoring. BURN offers “Pay-As-You-Cook" payment plans, making induction cookstoves accessible to low-income households. To date, BURN has brought clean cooking appliances accessible to ~ 200,000 households, with plans to expand this to 10 million households across the country.

Meet Hamda: using an improved cookstove makes a huge impact on her daily life 🌟 The smoke created from Hamda’s traditional cookstove was giving her severe headaches. After switching to a more efficient Jikokoa cookstove, her health problems improved significantly and it’s now a companion to her daily life. 🥘    Like Hamda and many other Somalians facing health difficulties, traditional cooking methods also put a strain on a third of the global population, according to the World Health Organization, in terms of relying on unsafe and environmentally harmful cooking practices. Improved cookstoves greatly reduce the amount of firewood used, which saves money, avoids carbon emissions, reduces deforestation, and improves the health of daily users. The cookstoves that Hamda and others are using from this social impact project are produced by BURN, the largest manufacturer in Africa for modern and improved cookstoves. #socialimpact #improvedcookstoves #climateaction #ClimatePartner Read more about this project: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAg-23fn

Singaporean firms are exploring opportunities in Ghana to source carbon credits, prompted by the rise in carbon taxes that took effect in 2024. By purchasing these credits, these companies can reduce their carbon footprint and lower their carbon tax liabilities. In line with Singapore's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, carbon tax-liable companies can only purchase government-approved, high-quality credits that meet rigorous standards. Ms Molly Brown of Carbon Strategy from Kenya-based company BURN, shared, “We’re exploring opportunities with this Ghana-Singapore bilateral deal, which would allow projects approved by both governments to sell credits to Singapore companies to offset their carbon tax.” BURN hopes to issue credits to Singapore from early 2025. A delegation of 22 firms, led by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore), recently visited Ghana to explore carbon credit projects, including initiatives focused on cookstove projects and the green mobility solution sector, such as electric vehicles. Additionally, Singapore is in discussions with other countries, such as Vietnam and Bhutan, to expand carbon credit sourcing opportunities.
