BURN CEO Peter Scott met with Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action Chief Ajuri Ngelale to discuss the construction of a new factory in Ogun State, Nigeria. Peter detailed plans for an end-to-end manufacturing facility covering the full production chain in addition to the Kano factory, launched in December 2023. Chief Ngelale reiterated that clean cooking is a national focus that boosts economic activity and empowers people to create sustainable solutions for the future. BURN has raised ~$15 million in carbon finance to subsidize clean cookstoves in Nigeria, which will positively impact ~3 million lives. There is currently a chicken and egg problem with cookstove carbon credits. Buyers don't want to buy because of low-quality credits, and project developers can't afford to build high-quality projects because no one is buying them. Buyers can solve this problem by, as Mr. Scott says, committing to buy high quality credits today.
The key to creating a cookstove sector that generates high-quality credits is to make commitments to buy high-quality credits today. There are many players, BURN included, that offer ‘forward sales’ contracts on future MMECD and dMRV credits. Commitments to buy these credits will cause billions of dollars of new investment to flow, with the knowledge that there is a committed off-taker on the other side. Over 900 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa lack access to clean cooking. The reliance on inefficient stoves and open fires bankrupt families, destroy forests, and increase indoor air pollution, leading to the death of 600,000 people, mostly women and children, every year. The outlook is equally grim. In Africa, unlike every other region of the world, the number of people relying on traditional biomass stoves is projected to grow, reaching 1.67 billion by 2050. I’ve been working in the clean cooking sector for the last 28 years - the last 14 as CEO/Founder of BURN – and up until a few years ago it seemed that this crisis couldn’t be solved, at least not at scale. Then suddenly, everything changed. With carbon credits - and carbon credit pre-financing - we could finally bring a clean cooking appliance to every household on the continent, by discounting the cost of a stove to a customer by 60-100%. In the last 18 months, BURN has provided ~$60 million of such discounts, allowing families to access lifesaving technology that would otherwise have been unattainable. In the next 18 months, we expect to provide an additional $110 Million in discounts. (In fact, more is possible as we have built the manufacturing and home delivery infrastructure across the continent to utilize $250 Million of carbon finance each year). Today, BURN leverages carbon finance to bring a range of clean cooking appliances including electric, LPG, and biomass stoves to 10 countries in Africa and growing. We use it to bring induction cooking to the 600 million people who currently have access to electricity, helping them make the leap from charcoal to electric cooking on Africa’s mostly renewable-powered grid. At the same time, we use it to bring our best-in-class wood stove to the ~700 million rural people in Africa who rely on firewood and can’t afford purchased fuels such as LPG, electricity, ethanol, or pellets. Carbon credits are not a ‘nice-to-have’. They are a matter of life or death, quite literally for the 600,000 women and children who might still die this year because they could not access a clean cooking appliance. https://lnkd.in/eUAZ-ShP

BURN's Head of Carbon Strategy Molly Brown was recently interviewed by KTN News, discussing the impact of carbon projects and clean cooking solutions in Kenya. Recently, Kenya took a significant step towards facilitating quality carbon trading by passing carbon market regulations which will enable project developers like BURN to continue attracting foreign investment to make clean cooking affordable. BURN has distributed ~4.5 million clean cookstoves across Sub-Saharan Africa, and with carbon finance we can subsidize stoves that would normally cost ~$50 on the market for ~$3-5. The average household will be able to save approximately 2 tons of wood per year, reduce indoor air pollution, and save an hour of cooking time per day. BURN received a Letter of Authorization from the Malawi Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change (MNRCC) to implement carbon projects amounting to the distribution of 2 million natural and forced draft biomass stoves, as well as electric induction cooking suites. This will benefit ~8 million people while preserving forests, decreasing indoor air pollution, and reducing carbon emissions. BURN will also establish a factory in Lilongwe in 2024 and employ ~1000 Malawians over the next 5 years. I had the privilege of visiting one of Acumen’s most impactful investees, BURN. This is the innovative company behind the famous Jikokoa cookstove. BURN designs, manufactures, and distributes clean, efficient cooking appliances that transform lives and protect the environment. At BURN, more than 50% of the staff are women, reflecting a strong commitment to gender diversity and empowerment. Their work has not only avoided millions of tons of CO2 emissions but is also preventing respiratory illnesses, particularly among women and girls who are most affected by indoor air pollution. Additionally, BURN's cookstoves save households a substantial amount of money on fuel costs, which in turn helps small businesses thrive. During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner of Tuli Dishes, a restaurant run by an incredible entrepreneur, Batuli Hassan who uses BURN's new range of electric cookers. Batuli informed us that she is spending less on fuel and making more food to meet overwhelming demand for fresh food in her community. This is just one of many success stories demonstrating the profound impact of clean energy solutions on livelihoods. I'm incredibly proud of Acumen's investment in BURN and excited to see how their continued innovation will drive further positive change.
