The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Global Center at the Child Mind Institute has named its inaugural 2024 SNF Global Center Research Fellows: Dr. Syed Usman Hamdani from Pakistan and Dr. Christine Musyimi from Kenya. The SNF Global Center Research Fellowships provide funding of approximately USD $550,000 over 4 to 5 years. This program supports early-career researchers with mentorship, training, and opportunities for collaboration, enabling them to advance mental health care in low-resource settings. Dr. Syed Usman Hamdani, Founding Director of the Global Institute of Human Development at Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University in Islamabad, will focus on addressing inequities in child and adolescent mental health services in low-resource settings. His project utilizes low-cost technology to train and supervise non-specialist school counselors in delivering evidence-based cognitive behavior therapy to improve outcomes for young people with mental illnesses. Christine Musyimi, Ph.D, researcher at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation in Nairobi, will work to reduce self-stigma and improve service engagement among homeless adolescents in Kenya. Her project will explore lived experiences of homelessness and mental illness and adapt the Honest, Open, Proud (HOP) intervention for this vulnerable population. Their groundbreaking work will address critical mental health gaps for children and adolescents in low-resource settings, advancing the field in Pakistan and Kenya.
