one thing I’ve noticed while running an online shop is that Americans never include their country when writing their address.

I don’t mean when filling in online forms, bc that’s obviously a required element. but when emailing me for address changes for orders, they never include a country in the updated address. but I always know the country is the United States of America because literally nobody else around the world would do that.

Seriously? Why would you include it though? It’s extraneous information like ofc its the us

there are 195 countries in the world

But we also always have to include our states, which if you get confused what country “California” is in, that’s kind of on you.

If you get confused what country “Hessen” is in, that’s kind of on you.

If you get confused what country “Karnataka” is in, that’s kind of on you.

If you get confused what country “Kärnten” is in, that’s kind of on you.

If you get confused what country “Bahia” is in, that’s kind of on you.

If you get confused what country “Manitoba” is in, that’s kind of on you.

Me before reading this post: Yeah, maybe I should try to learn what all the different US states are called. Education is important and Geography is fun.

Me after reading this post: Actually, I think I won’t do that. Instead I will make an active effort to forget all of the US states I know of.

In terms of an actual answer, the USA is actually 50 countries (states) in a trench coat. People often don’t write the country when shipping across states, because that’s redundant; for people who have never or rarely left the country, the habit probably sticks.

Basically, they consider their state as a country.

Plenty of countries have states with strong individual identities. The USA aren’t special. There’s nothing more “countries in a trenchcoat” about their states than about anybody else’s states. The level of state individuality varies between countries but I guarantee that that’s not a unique USA thing.
