There is a growing recognition in South Africa that social enterprises can and do create the most... more There is a growing recognition in South Africa that social enterprises can and do create the most jobs because it focuses on solving social problems and establishing economic sustainability. This article was based on a conceptual analysis aimed at assessing the development of social entrepreneurship in South Africa, as well as its prevalence and influence. We analyzed why social entrepreneurship has grown in importance and popularity in South Africa, as well as its relevance, and whether it has come to stay in South Africa. We also highlighted that the most common sources of finance for most South African social entrepreneurs are sales of goods and services, government grants, membership fees, and corporate social investment. This paper further highlighted some challenges faced by social entrepreneurs such as grant funding, which is the second major source of funding for these enterprises as well as a lack of proper buildings and equipment.

We utilize annual time series data provided by America’s Small Business Administration from 1988 to 2014. We decompose SMEs into three size categories (micro, small and medium) and analyze the impact of compensation on the collapse of each of these sub-divisions to capture the extent this might help inform policy. Our ARDL Bounds Test analysis shows that compensation and firm deaths or sustainability have long-run relationship. Through VECM Granger causality analysis, we find a unidirectional causality running from compensation to firm death indicating that the compensation system to workers of SMEs significantly contributes to their sustainability.

First, we use principal component analysis (PCA) techniques to identify the bioeconomy sectors that contribute significantly to the national economy. We find through the PCA that all the bioeconomy sectors that we analyzed contribute almost uniformly and significantly to the national economy. In this paper, we mainly study the financial performance of listed Small and Medium-Scale Enterpr... more In this paper, we mainly study the financial performance of listed Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs) on Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) Small Business Board in China and New York Stock Exchange MKT (NYSE MKT) in America. We institute unit root test, co-integration and Granger causality tests to analyze our panel data. Through unit root, we found that, the financial performance of SMEs listed on NYSE MKT in US and on SZSE SME Board in China were all not stationary. Our co-integration analysis showed that, the financial performance of SMEs on these stock markets had long-run relationship. In addition, financial performance of SMEs listed on SZSE SME Board does not differ statistically significant from SMEs listed on NYSE MKT and vice versa. On the whole, our results give us cause to reject the null hypothesis that financial performance of listed SMEs in developed stock market does not influence the financial performance of listed SMEs in developing market and vice versa.

We use data principally from the World Bank Indicators covering the period 1990–2016 to study the nexus among biomass utilization, economic growth, and CO2 emission based on the moderating role of biotechnology in China. On the basis of the results of our preliminary tests, we apply the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) for this analysis and employ the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) as a robust check and also deploy the vector error correction model (VECM) to determine the direction of causality.
