This optimization involves a careful balance between improving capacity and maintaining coverage, as enhancements in one can often lead to compromises in the other. ◼ Adaptive System Adjustments: CCO enables the network to dynamically adjust to varying traffic loads and changes in the radio environment. This is accomplished through the automatic tuning of coverage settings for specific areas based on current traffic demands. The introduction of advanced antenna technologies like beamforming and Massive MIMO adds complexity, requiring multi-dimensional configurations of antenna and RF parameters. Effective CCO solutions rely on the analysis of extensive data collected from the network, including UE measurements, performance metrics, and event logs. ◼ Data Collection Challenge: The vast and intricate nature of 3GPP specifications, as shown in the picture, often makes locating specific measurement data extremely challenging. Essential data for CCO includes: UE Measurement Data: Measurements from UEs on source and target cell/beam reference signals (RS), such as RSRP and RSRQ, are critical for assessing the quality of coverage. Failure Events Data: Measurements related to source and target reference signals at the time of failure events, typically included in Radio Link Failure (RLF) reports, help distinguish between coverage-related issues and mobility setting problems. RACH Access Information: Data on the number of RACH attempts per cell/beam ID, records of successful and failed RACH access attempts, and UE measurements of downlink reference signals for attempted beams are vital for mapping UL coverage and identifying UL/DL disparities. To address this challenge, simplifying spectrum migration is essential. The integration of Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) within the O-RAN ALLIANCE O-RAN architecture through the use of RIC and SMO offers a promising approach to managing spectrum efficiently as mobile networks evolve. By leveraging advanced RIC AI/ML algorithms and comprehensive data analytics, O-RAN enables dynamic and intelligent spectrum sharing between 5G and 6G. ◼ Implementation of DSS in O-RAN O-RAN facilitates this through its RIC and SMO components. Steps to Implement DSS in O-RAN Step 1: Policy Development and Communication Non-RT RIC: Develops and updates long-term DSS policies based on broad and historical network data, traffic patterns, and predictions. Communication: These policies are communicated to Near-RT RIC via the A1 interface. Step 2: Real-Time Decision Making Near-RT RIC: Receives policies and translates them into actionable, real-time decisions using xApps (applications running in the RIC). It handles the immediate adaptation of spectrum allocation between for example 4G and 5G networks. Step 3: Configuration and Enforcement RAN via E2 interface: Implements the DSS decisions to configure network elements for dynamic spectrum sharing, ensuring efficient resource utilization and optimal service delivery. Data Collection in SMO/RIC Non-RT RIC Long-Term Data Collection: Aggregates extensive historical network performance data, user mobility patterns, and service usage statistics.
