[Breaking] Rakuten Mobile will support the commercial deployment of open radio units (RUs) developed by leading U.S.-based vendors - including Battelle Memorial Institute, MTI (Microelectronics Technology Inc.), Eridan Communications and Airspan Networks - as part of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s project to advance Open RAN development. Having built a nationwide Open RAN network in Japan, Rakuten Mobile will collaborate with RU vendors to assist in the verification and integration processes required for commercial deployment, as well as support proof-of-concept trials. Opensignal reports that Rakuten Mobile has accelerated new subscriber wins from other Japanese mobile operators since the beginning of 2024 due to 5G network deployment and coverage improvements 📈 Insights shared at Telecom World Asia showed Rakuten Mobile's Consistent Quality score improved significantly from 2023, and its Japan market share grew from 10.6% in 2023 to 18% in 2024. We are pleased to share that Rakuten Mobile has expanded its 5G (Sub6) coverage in the Kanto region, including the Greater Tokyo Area, by 110% this year, surpassing our initial 60% target for 2024. Similar measures to expand 5G coverage have been made in the Nagoya and Osaka regions, and starting from January 2025, coverage will also be expanded in Kyushu, Okinawa and other areas. These efforts reflect Rakuten Mobile's commitment to enhance network quality and provide best-in-class mobile services for all our customers. I’m thrilled to share that Rakuten Mobile, Inc. International Business Division and I have been honored with two prestigious awards at Antonio Meucci Global Telco Awards in Madrid this week: 1st place for Outstanding Performance Telco Team and 1st place for Leading Male Telco Executive. A few years ago, I boarded a one-way flight to Japan to join Rakuten Mobile’s pre-launch team. There, I encountered some of the most visionary and determined leaders, tasked with what seemed like a mission impossible: building Japan's fourth mobile network and the world’s first fully cloud-native, virtualized mobile network. Success was not an option; it was a must. My role was to establish the international roaming & interconnect business unit from scratch, and to build a world-class International Business team that would challenge the status quo. Traditional approaches simply wouldn’t work. Fast forward to today, standing on the stage at the Meliá Castilla in Madrid, I couldn’t be more proud to celebrate this journey with my amazing team. These awards are truly a reflection of their dedication, hard work, and extraordinary achievements. I’m incredibly proud of them. A heartfelt thanks to the Rakuten Mobile leadership team for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in reaching this milestone in our journey.
