Provision of advice on the UK’s implementation of international conventions that relate to biodiversity, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Many of the issues facing biodiversity require concerted action at broader scales, in particular at a global scale. Due to advances in technology, travel and trade, the world is appearing 'smaller'. In response, our awareness of the impacts of our actions on the whole planet, rather than just our local environment, is becoming increasingly important.
JNCC is the UK Government’s nature conservation adviser in international fora. As part of that role, we advise on the UK’s implementation of international conventions that relate to biodiversity, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, and take forward the views from the four countries of the UK to inform international policy development.
Our work at an international scale is developing. Drawing on our experience of working in the UK and its Overseas Territories, we are applying our expertise and knowledge elsewhere, to facilitate sustainable use of the natural environment at a global scale.

Developing an understand of global supply chains, including the impacts that the UK’s activities, especially around global trade, have elsewhere in the world.

Experience in demonstrating the value of the environment overseas, and advising on how development can be achieved more sustainably, by taking into consideration the benefits the environment provides.

Application of our Earth observation techniques and expertise internationally, to generate habitat maps that underpin decision-making in other countries.

Development of models to understand different land-use options. These are being applied to inform decisions on agricultural land-management choices beyond the UK, including in South America.
