On August 18th our nation will celebrate the centennial anniversary of the 19th amendment’s ratification. JMM wants to commemorate one of the many Jewish women who helped influence and advance the suffrage movement so that all women would have equal access to the ballot box.

When the physical museum is open, you can see our new lobby exhibit which celebrates the life and legacy of Sadie Crockin and you can visit the JMM lobby gift shop to pick up one of several books we have on the 19th amendment and the suffragist movement.

You can also pick up titles such as The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote, Ballots, Babies, & Banners of Peace, or Wild Women of Maryland through the online store here to learn more about the movement and ratification.

A missive from Esther’s Place shop manager Chris:

Have you been keeping busy while at home? Have you found your “to do” list has gotten much shorter? Or are you finding your “to do” list is becoming quite daunting and you are ready for a distraction?

We here at the Jewish Museum gift shop wish to help minimize the stress of your “to do” with an educational and fun book. “Passages Through the Fire” recounts the experiences of Jews during the Civil War and tells the story of a minority population who carved out their own American identity which laid the groundwork for future generational integration.

Based on the exhibit originally organized by the The American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) and Yeshiva University Museum in New York, this book features personal accounts from primary sources, interpretations from expert historians like Harold Holtzer and Hasia Diner, photographs, and provides an elaborate exploration of modern Civil War memory.

This book is an enjoyable read from the most novice historian to the expert. With handy explanations of common historical vernacular, such as “lost cause narrative,” to in-depth exploration of political orders like General Order 11, this book has something for everyone.

To find this book for the price of $25, and others similar to it, head on over to the new online shop.

JMM Members can receive a discount by using promo code “member” upon checkout.
