These days, innovations have made it possible to bring the power of ultrasound to patients in remote and hard-to-reach places. But Jan van der Laan remembers a time when the technology wasn’t so mobile. The former Philips employee, who retired over 20 years ago, was doing some household cleaning when he rediscovered a piece of Philips history from the time he worked as a manager at the Philips Ultrasound group in the Netherlands almost a half-century ago. In an old suitcase, he found a prototype of what was then considered a portable #ultrasound device. It was never put into production, and a prototype ended up in Van der Laan’s attic. (The Philips Heritage Organization now has the device in the company's historical equipment collection.) This technology has come a long way in the past few decades. For example, Philips Lumify ultrasound is an app-based handheld ultrasound system that, among other applications, can be used in emergency care and community-based pre-natal and post-natal care, making point-of-care ultrasound truly accessible. Our systems perform an estimated 44 million diagnostic and interventional procedures at the point of care each year. It’s one of the ways we’re improving people’s health and well-being through meaningful innovation. #Healthcare #Innovation #TBT
