THE #FLYEYE TELESCOPE SETS OUT ON ITS GROUNDBREAKING MISSION We are thrilled to announce that the Flyeye telescope, designed and developed by OHB Italia S.p.A. in collaboration with ASI/ESA, is now on its way to the Italian Space Agency’s Geodesy Centre in #Matera. This milestone marks a significant achievement for our company and the entire space community in the field of monitoring potentially hazardous asteroids near Earth. Flyeye is the first #telescope of its kind, born from a visionary concept: combining 16 small mirrors to reflect a single image into a one-meter-diameter spherical mirror, allowing us to view a sky area 15 times the size of the Moon. This design is inspired by the compound eye of a fly, providing an extended #FieldofView and a unique capacity to observe wide portions of the sky. The telescope will be operational in Matera by the end of 2024, then move to its final location on Mount Mufara in Sicily once the infrastructure is completed (expected by the end of 2025). With its wide sky view, Flyeye will contribute to our Planet’s safety by continuously monitoring the movement of Near Earth Objects (#NEOs), including both celestial objects and space debris. This is just the beginning! Our collaboration with ASI will lead to the development of four additional Flyeye telescopes, creating a global network for space surveillance. www.ohb-italia.it #OHBItalia #SpaceSurveillance #Flyeye #AsteroidMonitoring #Telescope #ESA #ASI

OHB Italia S.p.A. AT CLEAN SPACE DAYS: ADVANCING SUSTAINABLE SPACE MISSIONS OHB Italia participated with Dr. Tharek Mohtar, to the #CleanSpaceDays at #ESTEC from October 8th to 11th, an event dedicated to professionals and enthusiasts committed to the #sustainability of space missions. But what does OHB Italia bring to this topic? OHB Italia is leading a consortium to develop the Grappling and Docking Interface (#GDI) for ESA’s "In-Space Proof-of-Concept 1" (InSPoC-1) mission, aimed at enabling safer and more sustainable space operations. So, what exactly is a GDI? A Grappling and Docking Interface (GDI) is a system that securely connects two spacecraft, such as a satellite and a service vehicle. This interface enables a stable link between the vehicles to support material transfer, repairs, or in-orbit refueling and maintenance. Think of it as a “grip” or “hook” that keeps the vehicles connected and precisely aligned, even under challenging conditions like speed variations or slight misalignments. Systems like these are critical for the future of in-orbit satellite and space station management, enabling efficient maintenance without returning vehicles to Earth. Recently, OHB Italia S.p.A. completed Phase B1 of the GDI project, testing two interface prototypes to confirm their capture capabilities under different conditions. The flexible design allows for handling payloads of various sizes. Tests conducted in a space-simulating facility proved the GDI’s reliability, even with misalignments and variable speeds. The data collected refined our simulation models, moving the project forward into Phase B2 with greater accuracy. #OHBItalia #SpaceSustainability #DockingInterface #SpaceInnovation #SustainableSpace #InOrbitServicing #SpaceTechnology #ESA #InSpaceConcept #NewSpace www.ohb-italia.it

IAC MILANO ABSTRACT #4 FLYEYE 2.0 TELESCOPE OHB Italia S.p.A. is advancing the Flyeye Telescope with #Flyeye 2.0: a key project within ESA's Space Situational Awareness programme. Building on the success of the #NEOSTED prototype, Flyeye 2.0 enhances its predecessor’s capabilities in detecting asteroids. With significant improvements like a larger primary mirror, upgraded optical channels and a review of the focal length, this next generation telescope is designed for wider field observation and a better performance. This ensures more precise detection of near-Earth objects (#NEO), making it a benchmark in #spacedebris and #asteroidmonitoring. www.ohb-italia.it #OHBItalia #FlyeyeTelescope #SpaceSituationalAwareness #ESA #ASI #SpaceTechnology #Innovation #SpaceExploration #NearEarthObjects #WideFieldObservation #SpaceSafety #SpaceScience #FutureOfSpace

IAC MILANO ABSTRACT #3 Standard Docking Interface Development for ESA’s POC1 Mission As part of the evolving European #SpaceTransportation and #LogisticsEcosystem, OHB Italia S.p.A. is taking the lead in developing the Standard Docking Interface, which will be a key device of #ESA’s In-Space Transportation Proof of Concept-1 (POC1) mission. The interface is designed to connect the active unit, integrated into the In-Space Transportation Vehicle (#ISTV) and the passive unit, placed on the client satellite. This system will enable safe docking, power transfer, and provide the stability needed for orbital maneuvers. This project highlights our progress in building the #interface, from the initial prototypes to successful testing with simulations. www.ohb-italia.it

IAC MILANO ABSTRACT #2 Metop-SG Microwave Imager Instrument Microvibration Campaign The MicroWave Imager (#MWI) is one of the key instruments aboard the MetOp-SG type B satellites, designed to monitor precipitation and provide insights into sea ice extent. During operation, the instrument is in a continuous rotation which can generate #microvibrations that may affect the pointing performance of other instruments on board: limiting and verifying these microvibrations through dedicated tests is crucial. The #Challenge: Measuring the forces and torques caused by microvibrations on the ground is complicated by several disturbances present during testing but not in orbit: a well-designed test setup is essential to minimize these disturbances. The #Solution: At the Airbus EVT test center in Toulouse, a dedicated test facility has been developed, featuring a pneumatic suspension system to isolate the test bench from external noise. This setup was optimized based on results gathered during the MWI EM test campaign, improving its effectiveness for the PFM model testing. Addressing Aerodynamic #Disturbances: The instrument's shape also introduces aerodynamic disturbances, which were reduced by conducting tests in a controlled helium atmosphere. Simulating #InOrbitConditions: The test was performed with a custom off-loading device designed by OHB Italia to simulate zero-gravity conditions and obtain more representative measurements of bearing noise at higher frequencies. All these elements contributed to creating a complex and innovative test setup, with valuable lessons learned during the MWI testing campaigns. #OHBItalia #MetOpSG #MWI #SpaceInnovation #Microvibrations #SatelliteTesting #ESA www.ohb-italia.it

IAC MILANO ABSTRACT #1 High Data Volume/Throughput Pdt System Tasks For Next Generation Copernicus Missions OHB Italia S.p.A. has actively contributed to the design and development of the #Sentinel1 A/B/C/D missions within the #Copernicus program, gaining valuable experience that is now being applied to the upcoming Next Generation missions. These new programs focus on increasing the volume of #scientificdata collected, aiming to significantly enhance scientific objectives as well as spatial and temporal resolutions. According to #ESA, the data volume to be acquired and downloaded for the Sentinel1-NG mission is estimated at 6 Gbps input and 10 Gbps downlink rates. 🚀 Leveraging on our established expertise, OHB Italia S.p.A. has developed an advanced method to design the Payload Data Transmission (#PDT) system for high data throughput missions. This enables the definition of key PDT characteristics based on: Satellite orbit Number and location of ground stations Platform housekeeping telemetries Scientific data rates based on satellite orbit locations. A case study on the Sentinel1-NG mission demonstrated that, with just 3 polar ground stations, it is possible to design a suitable PDT system that optimizes #datatransmission and improves the overall #missionperformance. OHB Italia S.p.A. continues to drive innovation in the space sector, developing cutting-edge solutions to meet the challenges of future projects. #OHBItalia #SpaceInnovation #Copernicus #NextGeneration #DataThroughput #Sentinel www.ohb-italia.it
