How to own the moment while you are on the move - Challenges and Opportunities of Third Culture Kids
The concept of Third Culture Kids (TCKs) has become increasingly relevant in today’s globalized world. TCKs are individuals who are raised in a culture other than their parents, in a country other than their nationality for a significant portion of their formative years. As a result, they develop a unique cultural identity that is a blend of their home culture, the culture of the countries they've lived in, and the global culture they've been exposed to.
Growing up as a TCK offers enriching experiences and unique opportunities for personal growth. TCKs are adaptable, open-minded, and culturally sensitive individuals who navigate diverse cultural contexts with ease and embrace diversity. They develop a global perspective, appreciate different cultures, and thrive in multicultural environments, which is valuable in today's interconnected world. However, TCKs also face challenges such as constant transitions, which can lead to feelings of rootlessness and identity confusion. Additionally, they may struggle with a sense of belonging, feeling like outsiders in both their home country and the countries they've lived in, impacting their self-esteem and identity development.
With guidexpat. taking care of international families arriving in Italy, I know how important it is to support TCKs in overcoming challenges and maximizing their potential by providing them with proper resources, support and networks.
Parents, schools, employers, and communities can play a crucial role in creating inclusive environments that promote cross-cultural understanding.
That's why I eagerly introduced Samantha Frearson-Tubito to Paul Barrie, the principal of the International School of Modena (Inspired Education Group). Samantha, a third-generation global nomad who has raised four fourth-generation global nomads, is currently finalizing her first book, which explores episodes from her life and her children's experiences as global nomads.
The perfect occasion for Sam's presentation arose during the school's International Book Week, expertly organized by Silvia Neri. Attended by parents, teachers, and students, Sam shared her extensive experience, offering valuable insights and tips. She read excerpts from her manuscript, sparking lively engagement from the children, who had many questions for her.
Personally, I found the concept of "Owning the moment - even if you are constantly moving" particularly compelling. It highlights the importance of children fully embracing their new life after a move and cherishing the present moment. The key takeaway is to ensure they bid a proper farewell, such as by organizing farewell parties and sleepovers, allowing them to say goodbye to friends and their previous location. This enables them to navigate through any feelings of grief, ultimately facilitating a fresh start in their new home.
