This study aimed to investigate the haplotype diversity and genetic connectivity of the coastal horseshoe crab (Tachypleus gigas) in Indonesia. To achieve this, we collected a total of 91 samples from six main T. gigas habitats: Bintan, Balikpapan, Demak, Madura, Subang, and Ujung Kulon. The samples were amplified using primers for mitochondrial (mt) AT-rich region DNA sequences. The results showed 34 haplotypes, including seven shared and 22 unique haplotypes, across all localities. The pairwise genetic differentiation (FST) values were low (0 to 0.13) and not significantly different (p > 0.05), except among samples from Ujung Kulon-Madura and Kulon-Subang (p

This study examined the food habit of horseshoe crabs (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda and Tachypleus gigas) collected from Balikpapan coastal waters, East Kalimantan. Horseshoe crabs were captured using gill nets and picked by hand along the Balikpapan coast. The width of the prosoma and the body weight of each individual were measured, and the gut contents were analysed to determine the preponderance index, food niche breadth, and niche overlap. Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda prosoma widths ranged from 4.1 to 15.4 cm and those of Tachypleus gigas ranged from 2.8 to 24 cm. Eight food items were found in the gut of the horseshoe crabs, namely: bivalves, gastropods, scaphopoda, polychaetes, echinoderms, crustaceans, leaf litter and others. Based on the preponderance index, gastropods were the main food item of the two horseshoe crab species. In accordance to the food composition the horseshoe crabs inhabiting Balikpapan coastal water...

Studies on microplastic distribution in waters are essential due to the threat potential for both aquatic organisms and human health. The abundance of microplastic is highly related to the increase in human activities along with inadequate waste management systems. This study aims to assess both the distribution and abundance of microplastics in the water stream of Cimandiri Watershed, ending in the estuary areas. It was conducted from August to December 2018. The water samples were collected from seven sampling sites along the Cimandiri Watershed (water bodies) and analyzed using a monocular microscope in the laboratory. Microplastic particles that were found were counted and classified according to type, color, and size. The results revealed that the average abundance of microplastics was 685-7444 particles m, and Palabuhanratu Station had the highest abundance with an average abundance of 1489 p...

The survey was conducted monthly in a fish harbour. Information on the occurrence of previous survey was also included. A total of thirty one lobster specimens were collected from fishermen. Twelve species of three families were recorded from the survey, i.e. family Palinuridae [Panulirus ornatus (Fabricius 1798), P. versicolor (Lareille 1804), P. penicillatus (Olivier 1791), P. homarus (Linnaeus 1758), P. longipes longipes (A. Milne Edwards 1868), P. polyphagus (Herbst, 1793), Linuparus somniosus Berry & George 1972, Palinustus waguensis Kubo 1963, Puerulus mesodontus Chan, Ma, & Chu, 2013], family Scyllaridae [Parribacus antarcticus (Lund 1793), Thenus indicus Leach, 1815], and family Nephropidae [Metanephrops andamanicus (Wood-Mason, 1891)]. The habitus photographs are presented and biological information of the lobsters are describ...

This research was conducted in Kuala Tungkal, Tanjung Jabung Barat, Jambi from July 2009 to June 2010 and partially carried out periodically. The results showed the difference in group size distribution between t he mantis shrimp caught in the intertidal and those caught in subtidal areas. The length of the mantis shrimps in the intertidal area ranged from 25 to 233 mm with the dominant length was 7996 mm, while in the subtidal area the length ranged from 160-366 with dominant length between 193-258 mm. Growth coefficient (K) was 0.14 for males and 0.11 for females; while L∞ was the same for the two sexes, i.e. 381.68 mm. The life-span of the shrimp was estimated to be 6.7 to 8.5 years. The value of exploitation ra te (E) was 0.42 indicating a not optimum exploitation rate of the shrimp.

The heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) were detected in the sediment and their spatial distribution was mapped. This study was conducted in Tangerang coastal waters, a part of Banten Province, Indonesia. The sediment samples were collected in April and August 2013. Some water parameters were also observed. The Spearman rank correlation test was taken to determine the correlations between heavy metal concentration and particle size, and between heavy metal concentration and total organic carbon. The distribution of heavy metals in the sediments was spatially different in each area. The concentration of Hg in general exceeded the threshold. The Spearman rank correlation showed no relationship between the concentration of heavy metals and the size of the particles or the total organic carbon (p > 0.05).

Relationship of mangrove environment to the shrimps and milkfish production in silvofishery area of Blanakan, Subang, West Java. Bonorowo Wetlands 2: 74-85. Silvofisheries represent an integrated approach to the conservation and utilization of which mangrove resources maintain a relatively high level of integrity in the mangrove area while capitalizing on the economic benefits of brackishwater aquaculture. This research aims to assess environmental conditions of mangrove ecosystem condition and its relation to the production of farmed shrimp and milkfish production and nature shrimp production in the silvofishery area Blanakan, Subang, West Java. And to see the relationships between the mangroves with the production of fisheries then analysed by the method of regression analysis. An attempt has been made to relate the surface areas of mangrove and the commercial shrimp production in those areas and adjacent waters in Indonesia. A significa...

Utilizing of “sorok†for “yutuk†catching was done 1 kilometer along the beach with duration of 1 hour. They obtained yield of 1 kg up to 1.5 kg. The utilizing of “sorok†was about 5 cm depth to lift up the “yutukâ€, and then it was catched by their hand and entered it into a basket net. The catching results were three species: Emerita emeritus, Hippa adactyla, and Albunea symmysta. Survey’s results showed that “yutuk†dimensions were length of (1.70- 5.00) cm and width of (1.40-3.70) cm. Digging ability to the beach sands of the “yutuk†was (1.50-5.50) cm. Power requirement for beach sands digging was determined by measured pooling force and cutting area of the beach sands. Research results showed that the amount of pooling draft was (0.05-0.28) kgf/cm2 . It can be concluded that...
