The Queen leaves four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren

The UK and Commonwealth entered a period of mourning following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth was the second-longest reigning monarch in world history, having taken the throne on February 6 1952 following the death of her father, George VI.

She leaves behind a strong family foundation and a line of succession that spans three generations.

This includes four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, with her eldest son Prince Charles now King.

What is the line of succession?

The Queen’s eldest son, Charles is now King. He is 73 years old.

Like many royals Charles served in the Royal Navy, including as a helicopter pilot. He is known for his campaigning on climate change.

He married Lady Diana Spencer in St Paul’s Cathedral in 1981, and they had two children together, William and Harry, but the couple divorced in 1996. She died in a car crash a year later.

In 2005 Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles, who became Duchess of Cornwall.
