Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s daughter, Aaliyah, got married in December. The wedding festivities were hugely emotional for him, and in a recent interview, the director said that he was ready to leave the ceremony because he was so overwhelmed. Anurag also shared that he cried for 10 days after Aaliyah’s wedding and compared the emotions he experienced to what he felt when she was born. Aaliyah is Anurag’s only child with first wife, film editor Aarti Bajaj.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India, he said, “I had the same feeling when my daughter was born. I don’t know why I cried so much, but I cried. Same thing at her wedding. I think I cried non-stop for 10 days. I don’t know why, and in front of random people.” Anurag said that he was talking to someone and the moment his daughter came up in the conversation, he “burst out crying.”

After being in an emotional state for 10 days, Anurag went through a different experience. He said, “Suddenly, I stopped drinking, I stopped crying, everything just stopped. I think this was a big catharsis for me, which went on for 10 days.” He added that on the wedding day, after the rituals were done, he wanted to leave but Vikramaditya Motwane, who was also present during the interview, stopped him. “At my daughter’s wedding, after the varmala and havan was done, I couldn’t handle it. I was so overwhelmed and emotional, I wanted to leave the wedding, even before the reception began. And I was going out but he stopped me. He took me out, we went for a long walk and then we came back,” he said.

In an earlier chat with Film Companion, Anurag said that he was unavailable when his daughter was growing up. “My daughter is all grown up. She has forgiven me. She has come out and talked to me. ‘Why were you always working so much?’ And I would try to explain I made low budget films. I had to do twice the amount of work. Or three times the amount of work. And she understood, but still, you know, one could have made time,” he said.
