Martica Sawin is an art historian and critic who has been commenting on 20th century art in print and in the classroom since 1953. Although she is best known for her work in Surrealism (Surrealism in Exile and the beginning of the NewYork School, MIT Press, 1995) she is the author of monographs and essays that cover a wide-ranging field. She served as chair of the art history department at Parsons School of Design f.rom 1971 to1994 and was the founding director of Parsons in Paris.

One evening in the winter of 1940-41 three young artists from the Federal Art Project laid out so... more One evening in the winter of 1940-41 three young artists from the Federal Art Project laid out some canvases on the floor and began to experiment on them with a quick-drying lacquer paint, which they found hardened almost immediately when dripped onto the canvas. William Baziotes, the artist who had bought the paint at Arthur Brown's art supply store, was excited about its possibilities and had brought some over to the studio of Gerome Kamrowski so that they, along with Jackson Pollock, could try it out together. As they were “fooling around,” as Kamrowski calls it, they all worked on the same canvases and during the course of that evening produced a number of collaborative spontaneous works. Most of these Kamrowski discarded when he moved to another studio, but one was kept as a kind of souvenir (Fig. 1), and it is this work that has surfaced in recent years in a number of exhibitions and publications—a kind of twentieth-century equivalent of the Gauguin-Serusier Talisman. The current increase in representational painting, however, has sent its advocates scurrying to establish a pedigree. This search for roots has led to the exhuming of realist grandparents, many of whom, it develops, are still hard at work in their studios. In Realism and Realities: The Other Side of American Painting, 1940–1960, co-curators Greta Berman and Jeffrey Wechsler have taken a major step towards a reassessment of “the vast amount of art eroded, uprooted, or covered over by the floods of abstract expressionist painting and criticism during the late forties and fifties.
