The projects addressed partnerships between the universities and their urban communities in different contexts, including the creation of college-town developments, establishing a center for urban water stewardship, facilitating reverse-transfer with local community colleges, and setting up and cultivating partnerships with local businesses.

The following case study of MSU Denver’s new Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) Building reveals the roles played by partnerships among universities, faculty, and local civic and industry leaders in creating new curricula and facilities. The new Advanced Manufacturing Sciences (AMS) curriculum and specialized labs will be “game changers” for manufacturing in Colorado, because they provide flexible maker-spaces that encourage the iterative, changing interaction among students, faculty, and industry essential in an evolving economy. Nurturing such places for collaboration fosters self-sustaining curriculum enrichment.

Moving beyond the standard industry advisory councils used in many, especially professional programs, the institution has consulted with industry leaders prior to building facilities and developing curriculum to ensure industry needs are met. As MSU Denver faculty collaborated with their industry partners, they worked to embed both content and skills throughout the curriculum to ensure alumni were prepared for this 21st Century workplace. Additionally, MSU Denver has honored past experience and on the job training of employers and employees in a way that many four-year institutions have resisted.

In addition, because grief often produces difficulty with cognitive processes, it was hypothesized that bereaved individuals would demonstrate impaired performance on neuropsychological tests of memory, attention, and reasoning ability. Significant differences between head-injured and bereaved individuals were found on only one clinical scale of the Grief Experience Inventory largely supporting the idea that grief among these individuals is similar. While a trend suggestive of the second hypothesis was found on tests of cognition, the head-injured and bereaved subjects differed significantly on all such tests with the exception of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and specific subtests of the California Verbal Learning Test.

The sustainable structures topic was pursued within senior project classes offered in summer 2013 and 2014 at MSU Denver. The first project addressed new members, while the second dealt with retrofits. These projects were motivated by faculty research in developing new sustainable construction systems using composites. Since underlining faculty research is on an international scale, students had direct access to researchers world-wide. Such research was used as an instrument in the “Experimental Methods in Structural Engineering” course. The students were also exposed to a broader-range of...
