A randomized-blocks experimental design with four replicates was adopted. Treatments consisted of three crops of arrowroot intercropped with sunnhemp, with the sunnhemp being harvested at 90, 120, and 150 days after seeding (DAS), plus a control treatment (arrowroot monocrop). At each sunnhemp harvesting time, the length of arrowroot plants, mass and nutrient production by sunnhemp, and incidence of invasive plants were evaluated. At harvesting, in addition to rhizome productivity, nutrients and starch production by the rhizomes were evaluated. The intercropping provided a greater arrowroot plant length and lower incidence of invasive plants in the area. However, measuring such effects can contribute to a better understanding of crop rotation. In two experiments, we evaluated the content of legume-N in crop tissue and the fertilizer value of the roots and shoots of two legume species. Roots, shoots, or whole plants of the legumes sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea) and jack beans (Canavalia ensiformis) were cropped as green manure to supply nitrogen to cabbage crops (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). The principle of the A-value technique was applied to estimate the fertilizer value of each plant part. In a pot experiment, both the content of legume-N in cabbage and the fertilizer value of the whole plant was higher than the shoots, which was in turn higher than that of the roots. In field condition, roots had a decreasing effect on the N content of cabbage plants. Growing cabbage on legume root residue resulted in an increased absorption of 15N-urea, resulting in negative values for legume-N content: -13.59 g kg1 and -3.51 g kg1 for sunhemp and jack beans, respectively. Suggesting both low N supply by roots and N immobilization in soil organic matter or microbial biomass. Future research should focus on estimating the net N acquisition by plants from root residues under field conditions, where rooting patterns and biomass distribution differ from those in pot experiments, therefore giving a more realistic quantitative estimate.

RESUMO ñ Com o objetivo de comparar a umidade e a fertilidade do solo em sistemas de cafeeiro con... more RESUMO ñ Com o objetivo de comparar a umidade e a fertilidade do solo em sistemas de cafeeiro consorciado com nÌveis baixos de adubaÁªo e em cultivo convencional, foram testados os seguintes tratamentos: cafeeiro (Coffea arabica L.) a pleno sol; cafeeiro com fedegoso; cafeeiro com fedegoso e bananeira; cafeeiro com fedegoso, bananeira e ipŒ-preto, os trŒs œltimos com a mesma densidade de plantas consorciadas e todos os tratamentos com o mesmo nœmero de plantas de cafØ. O ensaio foi mantido por 57 meses, e a retenÁªo de Ægua pelo solo e a evoluÁªo da fertilidade no perÌodo foram avaliados na œltima estaÁªo seca (54 meses). A economia hÌdrica tem balanÁo favorÆvel para o cultivo em consÛrcio no inÌcio da estaÁªo seca, porØm sua manutenÁªo dependerÆ da exigŒncia hÌdrica dos componentes do consÛrcio e do regime hÌdrico. O cultivo consorciado favoreceu a manutenÁªo do pH e a reduÁªo da saturaÁªo por alumÌnio, muito embora as necessidades de nutrientes dos componentes do consÛrcio devam ser satisfeitas por meio de entradas externas, para evitar o empobrecimento gradual do solo. SOIL MOISTURE AND SOIL FERTILITY OF COFFEE IN AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS ABSTRACT ñ The aim of this study was to compare the soil moisture and fertility in coffee systems intercropped with trees with low levels of fertilization and in conventional system; the following systems were tested: coffee (Coffea arabica L.) under full light; coffee with Senna macranthera; coffee with Senna macranthera and Musa sp.; coffee with Senna macranthera, Musa sp. and Zeyhera tuberculosa. The last three systems were evaluated with the same density of intercropped plants and all treatments with the same number of coffee plants. The trial was conducted during a 57-month period. A favorable balance for water conservation in the soil was obtained in the intercropped system at the beginning of the dry season. However, the maintenance of this balance will depend on the water demand of the components of the intercropped system and the dry season duration. The intercropped system favored pH stability and reduction in aluminum saturation, nevertheless the nutrient requirement of the components of the intercropped system should be supplied by means of external inputs, to avoid soil impoverishment.
